Starting from the left: Eugenia Tsigaris (a family friend), my grandmother Bessie Giannacopoulos, George Tsigaris, and my uncle Paul Janis (Anglicized version of Giannacopoulos), who went to the Englewood/Teaneck area Greek congregation in the late 1950's and early 1960's (Nana died in 1961 and Uncle Paul in 1999).

I love old photos. I just was given a bungh from my Gammie who just died. This is her at age 12 or 13. I love this photo.

Nina that picture is so neat. I think having old pictures and such of family is very important. It gives the family a sense of coming from somewhere.

My mom left her family 35 years ago now, and I never knew them. She became a witness and suddenly they were dead to her. I thought we were just poor lil rejects. Then one day I ran to Mineola TX and met my moms adopted brother and saw what our family was like. It has been 3 years since. They told me of my grandma and how she and my grandpa were politicians. Also how I had many generations of soldiers and military personel and all of these neat people in my family. It really helped me to know that there was more to my family than the one crazy lil branch I had been stuck with and that was my mom. Who never taught us that we had any roots. We were just witnesses.

Here's another one I just scanned for you Nina and for Room 215.

Standing are (left to right) George Giannacopoulos, Spiro Giannacopoulos and Paul Giannacopoulos; sitting (left to right are Spiro's wife Mona, Bessie's husband (sorry Nina, I can't remember his name!), Bessie Giannacopoulos and Katherine Giannacopoulos

I can really relate to that. My mother alienated me from her family and my father's family. I was just a witness, my family was to be avoided. I grew up with no real sense of heritage.

Soledad, I started a thread on this topic. I am curious to know what your story is regarding your family!

I dont want to hog Cuzanhearts thread!

You're not hogging, Sparkplug! It's a conversation and can go anywhere it wants to! Just reminded hubby that my grandfather's name was Demetrios (good Greek name, that). He got everybody else right, though, which is actually pretty remarkable considering that he met my mom, Uncle Spero and Uncle Paul when they were old.

    Bessie's husband

Looks like he was a Russelite (He has a beard that imitates Russel's)... it was men like him that prompted Rutherford to ban beards to remove decent from the ranks and to let everyone know that he was the new boss

    Howdy Else!

Actually he was a Greek Orthodiox priest. Of course he also made bathtub gin in the 20s while he was a priest, but I guess God is willing to overlook those little foibles, eh?

AND the reason he came to America was because he tried to start a small revolution among the farm workers in his village in Greece and it didn't work out too well so a long sea voyage seemed to be in order for him.
