For centuries The Catholic Church stated that it was a mortal sin to eat meat on Fridays, which theoretically meant that anyone who intentionally ate a Ham Sandwich on a Friday and died thereafter was sent to Hell for an eternity.

Now, centuries later, rational, logical and appropiate changes were made by the Church to make Teachings ( like the other one on ST. Christopher ) reflect the different epistemology and ontology and changing circumstances of the times.

Sound familiar? ( WBTS. ) So, where did those who ate a Ham Sandwich on Fridays and died back then go? Where are they now? BTW.Go ahead and enjoy your Ham Sandwich, swiss cheese and mustard on rye anyone?. Not intented to hurt any Catholics, as I too was once one before the wbts got me.

I'll bet there are Catholics who aren't pleased that this has changed.

I knew of one guy who was so pissed off that his church wasn't doing a Latin mass any more that he caused a ruckas and left off training to be a monk. I guess it's okay if you actually understand Latin, but are there many Catholics nowadays who do?

I'd think that repealing the no-meat on Fridays thing would make life a lot easier, but then people do love their little traditions.

There's a fine distinction to be made.

    1) The requirement not to eat meat on Fridays is a disciplinary law set by the Church, rather than doctrine.

    2) It is considered a mortal sin to not eat it because it would be going against the authority of the church to set fast days (abstaining from meat is considered a form of fasting).

    3) Since it is a law based on discipline, there is no contradiction of doctrine.

    4) The law on abstention on Fridays is still in effect, but it can be abrogated by other works of piety.

I suppose it helped people to have a more healthy diet eating more fruit and veg instead of meat every single day

Ya the Catholic reasoning is an odd one ,even as a Catholic kid i thought the no meat on Fridays was just so ludicris but every Friday we had to eat fish even tho the parents would beat the crap out of each other ,it was a sin to eat meat on Fridays. Gawd ,religion.
