Real football, what some people call soccer. There are 1000's of football clubs in the UK. They are split into 100's of leagues. If a team does well, it moves up to a higher league, if it does badly, it moves down a league. Teams play other teams that are in the same league. The very top English league is known as "The Premiership". However, every year, there is a competition set up by the Football Association known as the "F.A. Cup". It's a knock-out competition. Any team can enter, although the higher-up teams don't have to play in the earlier rounds. So now we have a situation where lowly little Exeter, several leagues down the line, were pitted against mighty premiership side Manchester United last Saturday. The result was a 0-0 draw. Bad for Man U, excellent for Exeter! This means that the match will go to a replay. Now, little Exeter have big debts for a tiny little club, however, the replay against Man U will earn them over a million pounds ($1.9 million) which will wipe out all of their debts. My team is Portsmouth, nicknamed "Pompey", a premiership side recently promoted to the top league. Our greatest rivals are from Portsmouth's neighbouring city of Southampton, whom we've been drawn to play against in the next knockout round of the FA Cup. The 2 cities of Portsmouth and Southampton detest one another, both being sea-ports who compete for business and work. So when the teams play one another it is usually a real grudge match. Hi Mike.

...and there's that whole Harry Redknapp angle and everything! What a draw!

Errm... just thought I'd mention that a certain team of Goldenboys has played them both and beat them both this year. On the relative showings against us, Pompey were miles better. So you ought to be okay.

    Good luck!

    Duncan.

Yeah, I figured it was what we in the US call soccer. But I do appreciate your breaking down the leagues thing. Quite facinating! Good for Exeter, that's awesome to see the underdog do so well.

    Hugs
