I know that many feel the Bible teaches equality between the sexs. But an honest look without any fear of God what do we find??

I think the Bible has played a prominant role. The Bible also condoned slavery and the right to beat one's slave severly up to the point of death as long as he lived a day after the beating. It has played a role in justifying wars,,that have "god's" backing. What will a honest look show?

well........... when my ex used to show me the proverbs chapter that listed qualities of a good wife i'd turn it back on him and ask why wasnt i allowed to do business, manage money, do the things listed...( i was allowed to clean house , clean kids, do what iw as told and that was it)

he quit showing me those scriptures and stuck to the one that uses the term " husbandly owner" of women. he owned me..do what he said or suffer the consequences.

There is no point in judging Bible texts from the standpoint of modern moral values. They just reflect the ethics of their time, as modern texts do.

We wouldn't think of doing so if those texts had not been first exposed to us as the eternal revelation given once for all times.

The Bible doesn't give us the least clue to live in a modern context: how to exercise our political responsibility in a democratic setting, how to live a couple relationship with equal rights, etc. Fortunately many Jewish or Christian believers don't look to the Bible for leading their lives, but many others do and this doesn't help.

    Nark,

I realize they reflect the value at the time writen,,but may they also have contributed to it,,or help keep things the way they are,,longer because the bible condoned it.

I think comming to understand the bible as myth helps alot. But for centuries that has not been the case,,and so this misconception of the bible being the word of God has caused the bible to be a factor against women's equality.

It certainly played a role in my father's constand bullying of my mother and why she always stayed under his thumb. He has ruined her life and if she hadn't been a christian all her life, first a Roman Catholic and then a JW she would have probably left him a few months after they had been married.

The message I always got from the bible and the JW's is that women are weaker, should shut up and not have an opinion. If they wanted to know something scriptural they were to ask their superior husbands first.

The bible does not treat women equally in a way that ordinary simple people could understand.

Wives should be in submission to their husbands is a recipe for bullying and unhappiness'

    Gill,

I know the are a lot of appologist that feel the bible honors women. Some find the very embasing verses in Timothy hard to square will women being equal and so claim those verses have been added latter by a dishonest copiest or by some transcrible error.
