For those of you who love history (and hope for the future of the Iraqi people), this really sucks!!

Looks like a journalist was making a documentary on the archaeological looting and he was recently seized as a hostage:

The loss of information boggles the mind. If this happened to a person, they would have alzheimers. Losing knowledge of who we were, we no longer know who we are.

Yep ... and they probably destroyed any evidence of 606/607

This is too bad, and something should be done. I know many may this this is unimportant, but they would be sadly mistaken.

The photojournalist documenting the archaeolgical destruction was released about a week ago. Hopefully, they didn't sabotage his tapes! When the Buddhas at Bamiyan fell, I was sick to my stomach. All this other destruction is just wasteful and tragic. Sad...

Oh that's great news to hear, CountryGirl! I will definitely watch his video when it comes out.
The other month I was in Dunhuang, China, to see the giant Buddhas. We were informed that prior to the Taliban, their largest Buddha was only the fifth largest Buddha in the world. Now it is the third. I heard tho there is some interest in rebuilding the destroyed Buddhas in Afghanistan.

what's new, you need a bit of plunder every now and then to feed the thriving trade in illicit antiquities.
i'm sure that most of this stuff will wind up in western collections.
yeah it sucks that so much gets destroyed, but that's the price you pay for progress, be it american progress in iraq or taliban progress in afghanistan, progress always leaves a wake, but then it's never progress is it, it's just bullshit.
