More than 10,000 Jehovah's Witnesses have converged on the Tacoma Dome for the first of four weekend district conventions with the theme: "Teachers of God's Word."
The annual convention started Friday with participants from Western Washington and Oregon. Organizers say they expect about 45,000 Witnesses to attend the events which take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays throughout July.
A highlight is the baptisms that take place on Saturday afternoons. Saturday, 46 people were baptized and thereby ordained for ministry opportunities.
Baptized men and women have "dedicated their lives to doing God's will," said event spokesman Wayne Berry. They studied baptism for six months to a year or more and are ordained for evangelical ministries in the church and in their communities.
The events are free and open to the public.
