By the way the British were never slaves to royalty.Neither were ameican settlers slaves to the British.Although American settlers did have their own slaves...

If you really think these are cultures than you really havent had much experience of the rest of the world

And when was the last time you celebrated the Hmong New Year or Cinco De Mayo in England?

And dont start that slave crap. We were good o'l English when we started that trade.

    Sleepy,

I don't think that most Americans believe that our freedom is superior to yours (in the Euro.) That is what you, and those of the Euro persuasion, seem to do.

This is what I do believe, for all it's imperfections, I would still rather live here than anywhere else. Why? Because, in this country I'm responsible for myself and my future. Though this is changing more and more in the Socialist direction, where the government will tell me what I can and cannot do.

Oh, damn another political post. Too bad these are so interesting to read and respond to.

Sleepy, what is the point of this, really? No one said "America, home of the ONLY free people, or home of the BRAVEST", did they? What would you prefer? What would appease you? "America, land that hopes to one day be free"? "America, people who try like hell to be brave"? What would you have a national slogan of some other country be? What would please YOU?

What was the point of starting this whole thing? Do tell!

I never said America is the ONLY place a person can become a millionaire. Simon said only millionaires can become president. So I agree, that may be, BUT anyone with the ambition can do it.

Are people like you so bored with your own country/politics/life that this is what you spend your time doing? If you have so much free time, why not voulenteer, run for office where YOU live, take some classes, or at least vote :) Is America so fascinating??? It is all beginning to sound like sour grapes to me.

Lol, Big Dawg! While it IS entertaining, I must admit, I don't quite get it.

It is baffling the WHYS of it all, isn't it???

I can't help but think if it were me, I'd be like "to hell with America, What can I do to make My country better & to help MY fellow citizens."

Why the fqascination & constant need for comment? Sour grapes I say :)

I thought this was "What are Americans taught about U.S. and what do you really believe?"

Not "Tell me what you think and i'll keep replying how America sucks."

    Crazy:
I certainly hope this thread doesn't become all about USA / Europe bashing. That would be a real shame. Personally I'm learning a lot about beliefs and attitudes.

I had always held a high opinion of the States, though I'd never visited before early last year. I have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my trips, and intend to make many more.

Crazy, that's what it is fast becoming.

Little Toe, I learn alot too. Like just how alot of the Euros on this board think they are better than Americans (which would be racist, wouldn't it?).

Although you may take it this way, for me, at least, calling America "the land of the free" isn't really a way of saying "we're better than everyone else in this category" but rather encompasses all sorts of feelings of appreciation that we have for our own country. This appreciation stems from our individual experiences, the shared experiences of our families and ancestors passed on to us, and also derives from longstanding tradition. By this I mean that since the inception of this country, there has always been a national consciousness that we were onto something truly revolutionary in human history. If citizens of other countries have since acquired the same level of protected freedom as us, more power to them. They share the same vision. I personally have total respect for other countries and their right to their own national pride.
