I just read on the TV Ceefax page that Hank Marvin, long time Witness and marvelous lead guitarist of the "The Shadows!" (and my boyhood hero) has declined an honour in the latest list of new knighthoods, OBE's, MBEs - etc.

As a dub it would be against his principles to accept such an honour " Be no part of the World" .

It is nice to see that he sticks to his principle, whatever you may think of the stand .This was the first web page that Google found me.

    Marvin turns down OBE

    Jun 12 2004

Guitar legend Hank Marvin revealed he turned down an OBE "for personal and private reasons".

The musician who fronts the Shadows - Britain's most successful instrumental group - declined the honour while band members drummer Brian Bennett and rhythm guitarist Bruce Welch both accepted an OBE.

In a brief statement issued through his personal manager Brian Goode, Marvin, 62, said: "I feel very honoured to have been recommended for an OBE and I'm happy that both Bruce and Brian have also been recognised.

"However for personal and private reasons I've decided not to accept it."

Mr Goode said: "Brian and Bruce feel very honoured to be honoured - it's a thrill for them to receive the OBE."

The Shadows were Sir Cliff Richard's former backing group and notched up dozens of top ten hits - including 12 number ones - both with the singer and on their own during a five year period from 1958.

During their heyday before the Beatles burst on the music scene they were Britain's most influential and imitated band.

Marvin's metallic, echoed picking and generous use of the tremolo on his trademark Fender Stratocaster guitar inspired a whole generation of guitarists.

They backed Sir Cliff on hits like Living Doll, The Young Ones and Summer Holiday, but also hit the top spot on their own with tunes like Apache.

The band has been playing the final few dates of their farewell tour and are due to hold their last performance at the London Palladium on Monday night when they will be joined on stage by Sir Cliff.

    >>>>If further proof were needed of the lasting impression Hank made on the general public, it came when the famous Naked Gun/Red Rock Cider commercials were being filmed.

When Lt Frank Drebin (Leslie Neilson) asked 'That man in the Shadows' to accompany him. out stepped Hank, still an instantly recognisable figure in Britain despite having lived on the other side of the World for nearly ten years

From what Mrs Ozzie and I know of Hank, I'd say he might just be undergoing his own "Crisis of Conscience". Pray that it be so.

Interestingly though is that Brian Bennet the drummer of the Shadows, he once came to our Kingdom Hall to give the Public Talk.

    He has accepted the honour.
