Hi all. My boyfriend and I are heading to NY this weekend. We decided to drive into CT and stay a night there and then two nights on Long Island. Any recommendations for restaurants or places to see? We are really into lighthouses and want to visit as many as we can.

Any suggestions are welcomed. (And no thanks -- we do not plan on visiting Bethel)

    Thanks.

Unfortunately, my favorite restaurant is no longer in business (Windows on the World).

Otherwise I like the Rainbow Room. NYC is international heaven when it comes to food.

    I like Russian food too.

    Hey Purza

New York is TOO big to do in one weekend.

See Central Park ( good weather only); have a grand lunch in the Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel on 5th Ave and the Park. Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and have lunch in their stunning cafeteria. Check out all the neighborhoods at the upper west side.

See a concert at Lincoln Center ( outdoors in the warmer months or indoors) on the upper west side.

Go to Battery Park; the South street Seaport; window shop along upper Madison Ave.

It is an overwhelming city and its height and breadth is dizzying. You do need time.

If you will be on Long Island; take the Robert Moses Causeway south to Fire Island; a barrier island to the Atlantic Ocean. Go to parking field 5 and you can walk to and walk into and tour the Fire Island Lighthouse. We have done it and it is fun. It is a traditional old lighthouse and I believe it is still in use. It was used in the movie "Men in Black 2".

Also, if you want to drive out to Montauk, there is the famous light house on that point.

    Have fun! Frank

Just keep in mind the traffic on the Long Island Expressway (L.I.E.). Traffic is a horrible over the weekend - Always keep that in mind. Long Island is a great place to visit, but the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear of L.I. is traffic :(

Fire Island is a winner :)

    Peace - LL.

    Hi Purza,

If you look at a map of Long Island, you'll see that it is roughly shaped like a fish facing SW.

There are lighthouses on each tip of the fish's tail - at Montauk Point (the south tip) and at Orient Point (the north tip). If you check with Mapquest, they'll show you that you can get to each tip with a drive of about 40 miles.

From midtown Manhattan to Montauk (or Orient Point) is a good 150 mile trip, and you'll only be traveling at the speed limit after you get about halfway out near the nassau/suffolk border.

    Have a great trip!
