They say, that to make beneficial changes in one's identity, that to do it through the conscious mind, is often ineffective and extremely gradual.

But when one can overwride the conscious mind through subliminal messages more permanent and lasting beneficial changes occurred to our identity because you have reached the subconscious mind.

They say that through subliminal messages you reach the subconscious mind and if the subliminal messages are of a positive nature for good things they will produce tremendous benefits for you.

    But what have you heard?

I've somewhat tampered with this idea, and actually made my own subliminal message tapes. I'm still not convinced that it worked.

Doing it through the conscious mind DOES work, and it worked quite well for me. It requires a lot of determination and practice, but it can be done. I'm nowhere near the person I was 3 years ago. In my opinion, the idea of subliminal messages is just a quick fix to a very complex problem. People fall for the quick fix because they don't like the work that goes with the more difficult fix. The actual work it takes to make changes to one's self has some very positive side-effects such as improving your determination and self-discipline.

The subconscious mind learns either through repetition or through emotional attachment to an event or experience.

If you consistently engage in negative self-talk, or have negative beliefs about yourself that are pre-verbal (i.e., feelings that come up, triggered by events that remind you of some event in your childhood that happened before you thought using language-symbols), these don't disappear because you listen to some affirmations.

Affirmations are very powerful tools, though. I volunteer-coach a ninety-day goal-acheivement program occasionally, and the most powerful tool we use is an affirmation called a "contract", which is used throughout the 90 days. By itself, it would not be as powerful, but as a tool or component of a program that is designed to keep thoughts and behavior aligned and changed, affirmations are very effective.

You might want to read about Dr. Maxwell Maltz's techniques of affirmation here: http://www.psycho-cybernetics.com/

Thanks for the advice, f. Read the book... the late Dr. Maltz basically popularized affirmations in the US . Of course the web site is trying to sell you something - so is the Honda dealer.
