Out of the Woods

Some of you may recall that Mommie's older JW brother was critically injured in a fall at work last winter. He fell 30 feet from a ladder and landed on his hardhat; his initial prognosis of doom gave way to astonishment when it was discovered that he had broken NO vertebrae... no permanent spinal injury at all. After weeks in a drug-induced coma, the swelling on his brain subsided, and he woke, complaining, to the great relief of all family members, who recognize irascibility as normal behavior for one of us.

At the time I was frutrated and angry at the trickledown of grudging info to the unbelieving relatives. Since then I have managed to just be grateful for his continued recovery, and to put their childish vindictive behavior into its perspective. This was partly due to the kindness of my fellow exes, who helped me get past the anger and into that level space. Thanks; you know who you are.

So this update is for those of you who expressed concern and care for Larry's well-being. His neurologists say that his amazing recovery is mostly due to his abnormal bone density. Apparently he really is THE most thick-skulled human these doctors have ever seen; his bone mass is far heavier and denser than 'normal', and that is probably why he is recovering so fast. (and it explains so MUCH...wonder if Mommie shares his thickhaidedness? LOL)

He is still looking at a long road of physical therapy and he will have to work hard, but I hear thru the persistent family grapevine that he is doing great, and the pictures he sends to the nieces/nephews who are not shunned are being shared with Auntie Mommie, so I know he looks pretty good for a guy who was so near death so recently. At last report he was still mostly in the wheelchair but his progress is good and his prognosis hopeful.

Now that he's out of the woods, I can only hope that someday he will find his way out of the Tower's shadow too. But one miracle at a time...

Anybody's good news is always pleasant to hear, MD. Thanks for telling us about it. I'm glad you're able to get reports and keep up with his health.

COMF, musing to himself, "Ayup, ayup, that does explain a lot..."

As a fellow "fallee" I am amazed that he's alive at all. The death rate of people who fall from twenty feet or more is very high.

I fell backwards off a ladder from just under 25 feet in November '98. I broke my:

    heel bone
    femur
    L4 vertebra
pelvis - separated from spine at the sacro-illiac joint
    radius
    wrist
    and hurt my feelings, too.

It took over a year to heal up from just the broken bones. Then another nine months to get out of a black pit of depression and despair.

And I will be on pain medication the rest of my life.

Your brother is very, very lucky. And you can tell your family it warnt no doin' of Jehovah. I'm DFed and I didn't die. Close but no cigar.

Did your brother have any other injuries?

He broke his collarbone. I am pretty sure he had some orthopedic surgery on his leg, too. He landed right on his head and bounced, and his abnormally dense bones apprently withstood the shock better than the soft tissues did. Inflammation was the worst danger to his life. The effects of the induced coma are taking time to subside, too.

And yes, they certainly do credit Jehovah with his amazing luck. Wonder why Jehovah gave him a miracle instead of his first wife getting one when she was dying slowly in cancer agony?

Or is that a Jezebel-type question to ask?

MD I am so pleased that Larry is OK ...... he will be fine and given a few years maybe the bump on the head may just make him see through the WTS .....

My sister in law fell 20 feet and only managed to crack 3 vertebrae. She landed flat on her back!!! I tripped up a couple of stairs and managed to compound fracture 3 ribs, crack my sternum, tear the ligaments in my shoulder again and split my lip!

I am a bit thicker in the bone structure too MD .... thank goodness !!! Must be my Cherokee ancestry!

    Jan that's quite funny.

Francoise I'm so sorry to hear about all of that pain! Chronic pain management is something most doctors know very little about; I hope you've got the right one!

MD: Your brother is L-U-C-K-Y lucky. Not fortunate, LUCKY, lol.
