The crime rate is one of the highest in the world I was told. Belize City I was told is very dangerous, is this true? The wife and I was thinking about visiting the country, but after reading travel advisors, I don't think so. I lived in Cayo in the 70's and loved the place.
Anyone here lives in Belize or was there on a vacation?

I've never lived or been there on vacation.
But I've seen a series (presented by Ross Kemp) about violent gangs across the world, and one episode featured Belize city. It looked bad.
IDK, I'm largely ignorant of Belize - there may be good areas and bad areas. Obviously, it pays to be careful and check this out before visiting the place.

I often joke about retiring to Belize because they often play adverts for it and it looks beautiful.
Apparently it has a high crime rate though - Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua ... all close neighbors that often elicit images of criminality.
I expect it's like Mexico where there is the real, dangerous parts and then the fantasy world created for tourists. Usually they are kept separate but I never want to go someplace where the wrong turn takes you into a very dangerous crime zone.
The whole South-American drug trade probably operates through that corridor of countries so I expect there are a lot of gangs operating there.

thanks LoveUn. It is a beautiful country and only 330000 population. Those
damn gangs can destroy a place.
Simon: I really thought about purchasing a place on one of the keys, but now,
hell no.
