Don't usually go for these kind of books - but on the spur of the moment, I bought it from Waldenbooks:

    Carvel, the Christmas Cat

It is marvelous. Caution: the prologue is very hard to read, particularily if animal abuse is anywhere in your background. But it sets up the story.

Takes place in 1962 (when a lot of us were teens). The interaction between teens, siblings, parents, is great. The book isn't long and can be read in one long evening.

It's been a while since I've read something that made me cry, then later chuckle, then stupidly sit there laughing all by myself.

Most likely, not suitable for preteens - wouldn't understand teenagers & perhaps too graphic about the abused kitten lost, found & loved.

Highly recommend it & the book is a keeper!

lol - I bought it for my sil (who's my age) - it never got that far. I read it the first night I bought it.

Thought it was going to be sappy - absolutely not!

Don't know if the author has written other books - but I will sure look for him. Reminds me of Dave Barry style.
