    British Journal of Anaesthesia

Notice of formal retraction of articles by Dr Joachim Boldt

The Editorial Board of the British Journal of Anaesthesia has been informed by the Landesärztekammer Rheinland-Pfalz (‘LÄK-RLP’), the State Medical Association of Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany that serves as the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for clinical research at Klinikum Ludwigshafen, where Dr Joachim Boldt's recent research was conducted, that they have completed a systematic evaluation of the status of IRB approval for research conducted by Dr Boldt dating back to 1999. They were unable to verify IRB approval for 11 articles published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia between 1999 and 2009.

The editors of the BJA have therefore, in accordance with the journal's regulations, retracted the following articles authored by Dr Boldt and previously published in the journal.

LÄK-RLP was unable to verify IRB approval for 88 articles by Dr Boldt published in 18 different journals, including the British Journal of Anaesthesia between 1999 and 2009. A full list of all 88 articles involved is available on our website.

Lack of IRB approval means that the research was unethical, and that IRB approval for the research was misrepresented in the published article. It does not mean that the research results per se are fraudulent. Klinikum Ludwigshafen has commissioned an investigating committee to systematically assess the veracity of the findings presented in Dr Boldt's articles against patient and laboratory records. We will communicate to our readers any finding of data fabrication, falsification, or misrepresentation identified by the investigating committee at Klinikum Ludwigshafen.

The Editorial Board and publishers of the British Journal of Anaesthesia extend our appreciation to LÄK-RLP for their review of the status of IRB approval for Dr Boldt's research and to the investigating committee at Klinikum Ludwigshafen for their ongoing review of his research findings.

    Professor Charles Reilly

Editor-in-Chief, on behalf of the Directors and Editorial Board of the British Journal of Anaesthesia

    Another retraction from BJA

The article below is being retracted following an investigation by the Justus-Liebig Universität Giessen of the work done by Joachim Boldt during his time there, as there is significant doubt regarding the veracity of this publication.

Boldt J, Mueller M, Menges T, Papsdorf M, Hempelmann G. Influence of different volume therapy regimens on regulators of the circulation in the critically ill. Br J Anaesth 1996; 77: 480-7 (doi:10.1093/bja/77.4.480)

"The chances of blood being discussed with a householder are pretty slim."

When a h/h does raise the issue, it is usually an emotion based objection, which is still valid but often ill informed. Witnesses in my day were prepared with a rehearsed reply and a smart, quick thinking dub could sound quite convincing if they memorised a medical quote from the W/T .

Householders will never have heard of Dr Boldt....

BluesBrother: Householders will never have heard of Dr Boldt....

Likely not. Unless they follow the medical world's research and have stumbled across his name. It appears like Boldt has the potential to be as well known as Wakefield. Maybe someday Boldt will be linked to the anti-blooder movement in the same way Wakefiled is to the anti-vaxxers:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joachim_Boldt

In February 2011, Boldt was stripped of his title of professor at the University of Giessen for failing to teach, and the university is investigating possible charges of scientific misconduct.[6] His case was described at the time as "possibly the biggest medical research scandal since Andrew Wakefield was struck off last year for falsely claiming to have proved a link between the MMR vaccine and autism."[2]

The only place the regular JW will have heard of him will be inside the sacred word of the WT - the Awake magazine that quotes Boldt as an expert on bloodless surgery.

They will have no clue that it was Dr. Boldt's research that was pivotal in the use of hydroxyethyl starch solutions, to boost blood volume during surgery, for Jehovah's Witness patients. The regular JW only sees the selected quote but they have no idea that Boldt's research is cited many times in the HLC's Helping Hands handbook - the one that the WT publishes to promote alternatives to blood transfusions.

The regular JW won't know much about hydroxyethyl starch even though the HLC book has an entire section in it concerning its use and the risks associated with it.

I just did a quick scan of just Parts 3&4 of the Helping Hands (HLC) Blood Conservation Techniques and Perioperative Planning, the book that the HLC uses with medical professionals, and I found "5" of Boldt's studies that have been retracted:

This doesn't surprise me at all.

Virtually every secular "expert" the Org has quoted to support their ideas has either been demonstrated as wrong, fraudulent, or just plain unqualified to speak on the matter, in the fields of science, history, and medicine.

The kind of stuff that really raises eyebrows in the medical and academic communities. This is the primary audience we are going after these days, and this is powerful stuff that will give physicians second thoughts about swallowing Watchtower's/HLC dubious medical advice.

Birdie doing what she does best. She sees the shiny piece of information in a field full of words, and like a radar she finds it, she grabs it, and tucks it away to eventually be placed into the puzzles she seeks to solve. She has horded and fit together so many pieces of information. On many subjects surrounding the JW ( The German connection for one) I hope she will find a way to write a book.

    Amazing work.
