I just watched a 1911 silent film of Dante's Inferno, with recently (2016) added soundtrack.
The film was produced in Italy, but the captions in this copy are in English.

Rather disturbing, to say the least.
Curiously, very little of Dante's depiction of hell is hot hellfire. In fact in the closing scene, it is a pit of ice. I'm not sure where Dante got that; I don't think it is Catholic doctrine.
