1975 Quiz.

Having been asked to prepare and present a General Knowledge inter-pub quiz, I decided to include a question relating to JW's. There were 12 teams in all, 4 persons to each team. This was the question:

Category: Eternal flame. Question 1. Which religion foretold that the year 1975 would mark the beginning of the Battle of Armageddon and that the small number of survivors would go on to enjoy eternal life?

5 teams answered Jehovah's witnesses

2 teams answered Mormons.

2 teams left the quiz at half time

1 team answered the Aztecs

1 team answered Exeter City Football Club

1 left the question blank

Quite what I should make of all that is something I shall ponder over for a while..

Five out of twelve is 42%. Honestly, that sounds a bit high. I doubt that many people in the US would remember that the JWs were predicting the end way back then. Or that anyone was. It was a big deal for JWs, but not for anyone else. And it stopped being a big deal for JWs even before 1975 was over.

This was a Trivial Pursuit question in the official board game, I seem to remember. A surprisingly large number of outsiders are aware of the 1975 prediction. I guess it should not be too surprising because JWs were apparently quite vocal about it at the time, some of them featuring it in their ministry presentations, and in conversations with family and friends. It no doubt left an impression even if JWs themselves don’t talk about it much now.

Someone actually got it right...I wonder how many jws would have known the answer?
