Interesting look at the topic, and a quick read. As an aside, I had no idea that there are more lives lost to suicide than homicide in the US.

Why should suicide be an economic boon? Once you attempt suicide you suddenly have access to lots of resources?medical care, psychiatric attention, familial love and concern?that were previously expensive or unavailable. Doubters may ask why the depressed don't seek out resources earlier. But studies have demonstrated that psychological and familial resources become "cheaper" after a suicide attempt: It is difficult to find free medical care when you are sad, but once you try to kill yourself, it's forced on you.

This is, unfortunately, too true. Many folks try to get help, people tell them to "get over it" or whatever. Real help is often only available after an attempt.

Therapy costs too much for many who are poor (and depressed) - the only access is from the hospital AFTER one is admitted for cutting, taking pills, etc.

I have seen this time and again in my work with 'youth at risk' and rape survivors - no one listens to their cries for help until they try to suicide and land in an institution.

I've never tried to commit suicide. Some things to think about: in most states, you are still going to get bills for the hospital, doctor, medications, counselors, etc. If you used an ambulence those aren't free either. Just the ride alone costs over $100 and if they do much to you on the ride it can cost $1000 or more. They do bill you and you will get turned over to collections if you don't pay.

And as for suicidal people doing it for attention? Everyone needs love and attention. Here in the USA people become less neighborly and hospitable by the day. If you live alone,in most places, you could die of natural causes and no one would suspect a thing until there is an odor or icky stuff starts leaking through from your apartment to the next. If you even live in an apartment that is. Live in a house and have no interested family? You could be dead for weeks or even months before someone figures it out.
