    G'day all,

How's the weekend going? Good, I hope. Mrs Ozzie and I did something we've never done before........we went to a church wedding!!! It wasn't nearly so bad as what the Borg would have had us believe....quite good really. The minister, one of our sometimes posters, performed the service. The couple dressed in "olde worlde" garments, which befitted their personalities, for they live in a house which is a historic building in their parts. I got to thinking about the Dub's wedding talks where an elder would give a Public Talk for half an hour (d'ya know Mrs Oz and I sat through ours, it was so long!!!!!) probably including some instructions or preoccupation with sex. Unlike a Dub wedding, the service started with the vows and exchange of rings, then the minister gave some words on the subject of love, we listened to the singing of Amazing Grace and that was it. Mrs Ozzie and the minister's wife took delight in throwing rice. Well, they had never done it before, and they just......well, they just wanted to do it!!!! The reception was held at a nearby Chinese Restaurant.....yes, Ozzie drank shiraz! Visit Smiley Central!Actually I shared a bottle of Hardy's 1998 Shiraz with a new chum called Robert. So a pleasant afternoon and certainly a change of pace, and isn't that what freedom brings you?!

So what's on your mind right now? Let's try something completely different, okay? Ever wonder about the morality of taking out a long-term loan to finance a house purchase when you believed that "the end" was coming "real soon"? so, this weekend's poll question is.................

As a dub, how did you view taking out a long-term loan?

    1. What they don't know, won't hurt them!

    2. Well, we have to live in this system, don't we?

    3. This is great! I'll never have to pay it all!

    4. Maybe I won't have to pay it at all!

    5. If they don't know about "the Big A", why should I worry?

    6. Well, they're worldly people, aren't they?

    7. I will have to check it up in the bound volumes first.

    8. What would the elders say?

    9. It would be wrong of me to take out a long-term loan because I know the Big A is coming. (Yeah, right! )

    10. Other (please detail)

So there it is, good people. How did you view this matter? Did it trouble your conscience or did you explain it away, just like you did with other things? Do tell! We're looking forward to sharing your reminiscences.

    Enjoy.

    Cheers, Ozzie

    LOL!!!!!!

I use to think and tell others ''go for it...you wont have to pay it back in the new system so either way you win"

    10) In the area I live in I never heard anything about not taking out a long-term loan and I was an adult during the 60's and 70's. The only concern was your ability to pay the monthly payment. I have heard on here of others having different experiences and I do not doubt them. But here, many homes were purchased and built by the JWs in my area during that time. I guess we were quite a skeptical group.

Now I can say that many of those in their 20's back there did not think they would live to retire in "this system."

Ha! I never used to think of it at all in the "Armageddon is coming REAL SOON!" context. (Maybe subconsciously I never seriously believed that?!??? ) Married to a 'worldly person,' I supposed I just thought

    2. Well, we have to live in this system, don't we?

Only loan I think of as long-term, however, was the house note, and we just did what most people do: financed it at the lowest rate we could for 30 years. I wouldn't have considered a 5-yr. car loan as long-term, proving once again, I guess, just how much I didn't really believe in Armageddon's impending and imminent arrival.

Thanks for the question, Ozzie, made me pause for thought! (So rare! LOL) Glad you enjoyed the wedding, too!

    Both of these:

    2. Well, we have to live in this system, don't we? (for house loan)

    3. This is great! I'll never have to pay it all! (later in the early 70's about credit card debt)

Actually, I never got into the jw mindset personally about the whole 'big A is tomorrow, go and spend, or take out a huge loan cuz you'll never have to pay it off'. I just conducted my finances as I normally would have, and I tried to save for a 'rainy day'.

    Other.

We wanted to buy our own home so we could decorate it and lanscape the yard.We were renting a house and were scared the landlord would up and sell the house and we'd have to move. So we bought a house. But when you think about it you are just paying rent to the mortgage company. Because if you are late on the "rent" the MC will throw you out. You end up losing any money you put into the home.

Basically, we bought the house because we wanted a little more control than when you rent. Never thought we were being dishonest because the house and land are colateral they can repossess.

We tried to "simplify" for several years. A year after we left the WTS we bought a house. We plan on paying the WHOLE mortgage too. Might even buy a second house someday. Oh the rebellion!
