Christianity Today (Sept 2003) had a very disturbing article about Canadian laws re: child pornography (written by a Toronto author):

    http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2003/009/9.30.html

I won't quote anything here. But if you read this article, I daresay you'll feel

And, as a mere speculation, I wonder if what appears to be a "liberal" legal viewpoint in Canada has anything to do with the disgusting turn of events with Vicki and Scott???

While I detest child abuse and child pornography, I can certainly understand Canada's reticence to align its laws with the feelings of the U.S. religious right. It seems, though, that there is little to no moment at all when you look at this article, Vicki's case, and morrisamb's case.

It is difficult to understand how adults in the political and judicial fields can be so lax in their attitude toward child pornography. Aren't they parents of children themselves? As humans, aren't they revolted by the sexual exploitation of children? They should be outraged. And the laws should reflect their intolerance of such deviant behavior.

It really is totally disgusting and when they make an arrest you see it on hte news and people are freaked out for about five minuites.

The problem in Canada is that criminals have more rights than you and I :(

Slightly off topic but worthy of discussion, I think:

A few years back, I received some private correspondence from an exJW who claimed he personally knew a JW in Ontario who owned a pornography publishing company. He was arrested and jailed, but was never disfellowshipped. After he was released from prison, he resumed his pornography business. This person I corresponded with claimed the pornographer JW even used teenage members from his own Kingdom Hall as "models" for some of his literature.

Has anyone else heard of, or heard about this?

    I read it!

The new proposed legislation rules out an artistic defence altogether, requiring any material to meet a standard of "being in the public interest."

    This would nail any pedophile.

I personally think that any law that can help on nailing the pedophile is a good law.

    Go for it ..............Andy

RayZ, that's an interesting link you gave. I see it focuses on bill C-20. A comment from that CT article:

A federal standing committee may toughen the Criminal Code's child porn laws. Bill C-20 would introduce prison sentences of two to ten years for those convicted of "child exploitation offenses."

Elsie Wayne, a Christian and a Conservative Member of Parliament, told CT the proposed legislation still "leaves children vulnerable to sexual predators." Wayne appeared on the popular Christian television program 100 Huntley Street in January and initiated a letter-writing campaign.

She told CT that prosecutors should focus on the content of seized material rather than its intent. In January she appealed to the House of Commons to amend the bill. So far, the house has neither added amendments nor scheduled a vote.

C-20 is at least a step in the right direction (if enacted).
