    The Challenge

Imagine somebody with no knowledge of theology asks you about your god.

They know that you worship Jesus. They know that you also worship "the god and father of Jesus".

Please explain as simply as possible how you avoid the charge of polytheism without contradicting yourself, without using specialist theological terms and without resorting to non-answers lie "it's a mystery".

If you could use an everyday illustration as well that would be very helpful.

Why is it ok on this forum to be all over the ridiculous doctrines of the Watchtower but not the equally risible superstitions of the christian religion?

Maybe because WT doctrines - blood, paedophilia, shunning, no higher ed - actually harm people.

Of course, yourself and others are free to be all over ridiculous Christian superstitions, too.

Unless there are militant Trinitarians forcing the trinity belief on children and vulnerable people, my attitude is kinda "meh"

I think when you look at the figure called the angel of the lord in the old testament who is identified as god and being with god, the plurality of god in the old testament, the claims of Christ himself and how the writers of the use the old testament quotes applying them to both Christ and god, it don’t think the trinity is an unreasonable thing to believe.

Of course if you want to bamboozle people with the fine print, it definitely can be done. Jehovah Witnesses are good at that. Think so far outside the box, you forget how to think within it.

The problem is not with the specific doctrine but with the thinking that permits somebody to accept it.

We rightly criticise JWs for actually being gullible enough to go along with the overlapping generation dogma when they can't even explain it in their own words.

To really escape the effects of our cult background that is the way of thinking we need to overcome.

Demand reasons for everything. Never submit intellectually to appeals to authority or tradition.

Many, perhaps most ex-JWs, never get over the lazy thinking that kept them in the cult.

    The challenge still stands.

Clambake - I am not asking for a list of the texts in the bible that support the deity of Jesus. I could produce a very thorough list in 10 minutes.

My challenge is very very simple...

That actually is a very, very good point.

But, as far as I can tell, it is going to be awkward to say this to religious people (or, indeed, to any people): "there is a problem with your thinking".

I know it's off-topic, but imagine you're trying to reason with a Muslim from MENA. You've got a problem with his thinking, whilst at the same time you're extolling the virtues of the West - free thinking - above MENA countries.

    Confused? I would be ...

I'm saying it now. Didn't feel awkward.
