By 2020, 114 launches carried around 1,300 satellites to space, surpassing the 1,000 new satellites per year mark for the first time. But no year in the past compares to 2021. As of Sept. 16, roughly 1,400 new satellites have already begun circling the Earth, and that will only increase as the year goes on. Just this month, SpaceX deployed another 51 Starlink satellites into orbit.

Right now, there are nearly 6,000 satellites circling our tiny planet. About 60% of those are defunct satellites—space junk—and roughly 40% are operational.

Scientists are obviously eyeing possible future migration to other worlds, if or when the technology comes up to scratch.

It's not there at the moment.

"Global networks track nearly 30,000 pieces of space junk as they journey around Earth, from defunct satellites to rocket stages. However, there's far more debris that's too small to be tracked but is big enough to threaten satellites or astronauts on board spacecraft". - Six ways shoebox-sized satellites are trying to change the world - BBC News

Shoe Box satellites are being launched at an incredible rate, many fail and just add to the junk floating around the earth. Nothing will be done until there is a disaster of course.

Now there`s a theme for budding authors on this forum .In the distant future there will be so much accumulative junk orbiting the Earth that it`s blocking out much of the Sun threatening life on the planet that is dying due to decreased sunlight.

Maybe this is why China has built technology to destroy satellites? To help clean up space the same way as they have cleaned up Earth? I mean, the Red Chinese government only has good intentions, right?
