Western society has come a long way about child abuse the last 50 years, because it used to be hush-hush, it was never brought to the authorities - but it's been illegal in the UK for at least the last 100 years.

For the last 100 years, British people knew the age of consent was 16.

The OP refers to an article in The Guardian, a liberal British newspaper.

For some background, here's an article from the same newspaper, from 41 years ago....

    The Guardian - Tuesday 26 August 1975 - Page 5

Child-lovers win fight for role in Gay Lib

Mr Keith Hose, a paedophile - one who is sexually attracted to children - persuaded tha conference of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) yesterday to censure its conference committee for relegating paedophilia to a minor role in the conference business.

Mr Hose told the conference, which ended in Sheffield last night, that he himself had enjoyed "a deep relationship" with two boys aged 11 when he was a sixth-former at school. He is a member of the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE), which is campaigning for the legal and social accepttance of paedophilia. A PIE leaflet states: "We want to dispel the myths connected with paedophilia, and show that most paedophiles desire gentle, loving, and mutually pleasurable relationships. We believe it is inhumane to children to outlaw their sexuality and we support moves to lower the age of consent."

The successful resolution proposed by Mr Hose pointed out that paedophilia was an important subject because "There are many gay paedophiles, in and out of CHE, yet their needs and feelings are ignored in frequent attempts to dissociate them from the gay movement."

    well, yes, and no

    Age of consent in UK

    • In 1275, the first age of consent was set in England, at age 12
    • In 1875 it was raised to 13
    • In 1885 it was raised to 16

    Male homosexual consent

    • Decriminalised in 1967
    • In 1967, the first age of consent was set, at age 21
    • In 1994 it was lowered to 18
    • In 2000 it was lowered to 16

The Wikipedia page below has an interesting reference from 1972 regarding the Quakers desire for a lower age of consent of 14

And on a further note of disturbing stuff...

Scroll down to about a third of the way and you'll find this quote from police procedurals of the time...

"Women and children complainants in sexual matters are notorious for embroidery or complete fabrication of complaints... It is always advisable if there is any doubt of the truthfulness of her allegations to call her an outright liar."

Damn, I bet the WTS misses the 20th Century.

well, yes, and no - wrong, just yes.

In 1885 it was raised to 16 - so, for 130 years, British citizens have known that adults having sex with children is illegal and wrong.

Male homosexual consent - this is a red herring. British people knew that adult men having sex with boys under 16 was wrong - for the past 130 years.

Just to help you understand, darkspilver, 'paedophile information exchange' (PIE) was a disgusting group of dubious legality which tried to make adult-on-child sex legal. It was particularly active in the 60s and 70s. Several PIE members were jailed for child sex offences.

It's MO was to group with gay liberation groups who were fighting for the legalisation of gay sex and try to hitch a ride on them, trying to abolish an age for sexual consent, thus trying to make paedophilia legal. Ordinary people of the 60s and 70s knew that adults having sex with children was wrong.

sorry, what I meant was that I was agreeing with you in principle, but was highlighting the technical aspect that the homosexual age of consent was only lowered to 16 to match that for hetrosexuals 16 years ago - ie: "For the last 100 years, British people knew the age of consent was 16 or higher."

yes definately agreeing with you - the point is though that an organisation/group like that actually existed as openingly as it did during the time it did - and, although viewed by the majority, quite rightly so, as being abhorrent, it's activities were being reported in a relatively hands-off factual way by the mainstream press at the time.

And then there's the 1981 Time magazine article "Cradle-to-Grave Intimacy" that was referenced in the Awake! article earlier in this thead.

Nowadays, thankfully, people are much more knowledgeable
