    Hi guys.

As some of you may be aware, I'm currently studying in Uni part time training to become a therapist and councilor for ex-cult victims. My goal is to be the vest best therapist I can be, specifically for ex-Witnesses (because I can relate completely), and I plan to incorporate hypnotherapy in my therapy sessions.

I have already trained in hypnosis, however I'm not trained in hypnosis for therapy. Nor am I licensed to practice it in therapeutic work.

I'm hoping you can help me to change that. There is a course starting in March 2019 which will last until October 2019 which will train me to be a fully qualified, fully licensed hypnotherapist. With these skills under my belt, coupled with the training I'll receive from my University course, I'll be able to treat anxiety, depression, low self esteem, suicidal tendencies, self harm, traumatic memories and other types of abuse we're all familiar with.

Watchtower won't beat us. I plan to offer my services to ex-Witnesses for free. Without funding help it'd be impossible for me to fund this course myself - in fact it'd mean waiting another 6 years and then starting it, by which point many ex-members will have come out and go into therapy with therapists who just arnt familiar with what it's like being an ex-witness.

If you can help me I'd be eternally grateful.

    Hey buddy,

i wonder if we knew each other, used to hang out in Liverpool/Manchester in my JW youth.

Buddy, I left the JW's and slogged to get through a 1year intense course and a 6 year degree. The cost was more than a house, but I have no regrets and my reward is the patients I get to help daily.

May I humbly suggest a few things. Why not do a course in conventional counselling?

Official college courses in the UK have funding/loans in the locality and university courses are covered with loans.

If the course is legit, you should get the funding from the local educational board. Putting out a go fund me page for a course you are not even accepted on, may leave people wondering what you are doing with the cash etc. If you just want to help people this will muddy the waters maybe.

Also, out of interest can you show any papers or research from academia regarding the validity of hypnotherapy for helping people such as ex-JW's?

Ps I have a lot of experience in education, I am now actually in medical teaching. If you need any specific help with applying for stuff, PM me ;)

PE Congrats on your plans to get into a helping profession.

If you haven’t done so already, I’d strongly encourage you to study cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as an effective intervention for helping ex-cult members.

In that vein, are you familiar with the work of Peter Kinderman? He is a professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Liverpool. I took a course of his a couple of years ago. Very helpful. Although the course I took was fairly general and did not specifically address cults -- rather it focused on common mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and PTSD -- his course helped me consider alternative ways of treating the inevitable negative aftereffects of being in a cult.

The overall focus of Kinderman's work is mental health as opposed to mental illness. The shift in focus on health and well-being rather than illness is profound.

You might find this book of his insightful: The New Laws of Psychology. I highly recommend it.

I just want to say Snare is such a nice guy. He's worked so very hard to become a doctor after leaving the cult and I think he lost all his family too. He's always so humble and kind and yet he's so intelligent and well-educated. Listen to him PE, he's one of the good guys.

    Thanks guys

The conventional course I'm studying already is Psychology With Councelling at the Open University. That's a 6 year course which is currently being funded by my student loan. So all kosher and above board.

I believe if I went on to do my masters, I'd be studying CBT too. My ex-girlfriend did her masters in Psychology at Chester University and she was fully educated in that.

This hypnotherapy course isn't funded due to it being a private educational school. I was interviewed by the tutors only yesterday (they dont let just anybody on the course due to it being quite intense).

If this falls through I'll still do it, but it'll have to wait 6 years until I have the means to do so.
