1991 Watchtower study article just prior to WTS joining UN

Please see the study article, “Their Refuge–A Lie!” in the June 1, 1991 Watchtower, noting paragraphs 1, 10 and 11. Paragraph 1 calls Christendom “that apostate religious organization.” Why apostate?
Paragraph 10 asserts that “she insinuates herself into the favor of the political leaders of the nations–this despite the Bible’s warning that friendship with the world is enmity with God.” To support that assertion, paragraph 11 quotes an unnamed “recent book” which reports that “no fewer than 24 Catholic organizations are represented at the UN.” How were such organizations represented at the UN?
The unnamed book quoted in paragraph 11 is New Genesis by Robert Muller. (See attachment #1.) The sentence immediately preceding the portion quoted by Watchtower states, “All major world religions are accredited to the United Nations as non-governmental organizations.” Why did Watchtower omit that significant statement?
In the same year as that 1991 study article, the Watchtower Society also became accredited to the United Nations as a non-governmental organization, and served as publicity agents for the UN for the next 10 years–reapplying each consecutive year–until the alliance was exposed by the Guardian newspaper in October 2001, whereupon Watchtower withdrew its membership. (Watch Tower admits its affiliation to its Branch Committee in attachment #2.)
Notice that Watchtower’s letter refers to the Guardian article as “published allegations by opposers,” yet later states that “we are grateful that this matter was brought to our attention.” No mention, however, is made of the June 1, 1991 study article.
According to a public statement issued the UN’s Department of Public Information (UN/DPI), registered NGO’s had to “share the ideals of the UN charter” and “have a demonstrated interest in United Nations issues and a proven ability to reach large or specialized audiences.” (See attachment #3.)
What is Watchtower policy regarding individual JWs who do what their organization did?
“A person might renounce his place in the Christian congregation by his actions, such as becoming part of an organization whose objective is contrary to the Bible, and, hence, is under judgment by Jehovah God. So if one who is a Christian chose to join those who are disapproved of God, it would be fitting for the congregation to acknowledge by a brief announcement that he has disassociated himself and is no longer one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.” (Sept. 15, 1981, Watchtower, p. 23, par. 15)
“In joining the YMCA as a member a person accepts or endorses the general objectives and principles of the organization. . .Hence for one of Jehovah’s Witnesses to become a member of a so-called “Christian” association would amount to apostasy.” (Jan. 1, 1979, Watchtower p. 31)
According to the standard by which it judged Christendom to be apostate, and in light of Jesus’ words at Mathew 12:37 that “by your words you will be condemned,” should the Watchtower Society be viewed as an apostate religious organization?

Good points. And remember the 1963 resolution adopted by nearly a half million JW's?

    Excerpt:

    THAT, in order to prevent the destruction of the nations by their own means in war, the nations further refused the surrender of their sovereignty to God’s Messianic kingdom by setting up a society of nations, which, since 1945, has taken the form and the name of the United Nations, with international headquarters at New York city. This international organization stands for world sovereignty by political men. For years men without faith in God’s kingdom have endeavored to get all people to worship this international image of human political sovereignty as the best hope for earthly peace and security, in fact, the last hope for humanity. To date 111 nations have given worship to this political image by becoming members of it. However, we, as witnesses of the Sovereign God Jehovah, will continue refusing to engage in such idolatrous worship, for we see, under angelic enlightenment, that God has smitten such idolaters with a malignant ulcer, symbolically speaking, that will spell death to them as spiritually diseased image worshipers who worship a man-made political creation rather than the Creator of heaven and earth;

Then of course there is this :" Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities for there is no authority except by God , the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. 2 Therefore he who opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God,those who have taken a stand against it will receive judgement to themselves .3 For those ruling are an object of fear, not to the good deed but to the bad.Do you then want to have no fear of the authority ? keep doing good and you will have praise from it .4 for it is Gods minister to you for your good ,but if you are doing what is bad be in fear for it is not without purpose that it bears the sword ,for it is Gods minister ,an avenger to express wrath upon the one practicing what is bad." etc, etc. Rom.Chapt.13

Charles Taze Russell recognized the superior authorities were the Govts etc, when Joseph Rutherford came along he tried to make the superior authorities of Romans applying to Jehovah and Jesus Christ ,

the Governing Body of JW`s in the early 1960`s saw the error of their ways and corrected the situation and applied it back to the Governments / Secular Rulers of the Nations.

In 2001 I was a newish member of this board and it was some on here and elsewhere in the exJW community that helped expose this. I was shocked to say the least.

To think that I as a Group Study Conductor had taught the faithful all that stuff in the Revelation book about the "Scarlet coloured beast" whilst at the same time the Gov.Body were cozying up to the U N as an NGO of it! ...... . I was disgusted.

Thank you for bringing this important topic back to the top for the benefit of newer ones.

The specifics in the quoted book are an absolute jaw-dropper. The condemnation of catholic NGOs because of affiliation with the UN at the very time that WT was joining? A slam-dunk, no excuse, no rationalisation possible.

Just as a point of accuracy, I can find no evidence supporting the claim that the application is or was required annually. If anyone could supply that it would be interesting.

The current requirements for affiliation are as follows, the requirements as in 1991would be great to see.

The following is the current requirement from the UN DPI website.
