One of the groups that were more affected by the system were the children. School was a nightmare for them, they had to face the flag salute and other patriotic symbols that they refused to honor and also all the children had to be part of an organization call "Pioneros" that was basically similar to the German and Soviet youth corps. This was a constant battle for the children and also the parents.

The results of the recent Presidential trip to Cuba are mixed, the people love it and it gave then hope; the Government didn't like a bit. Maybe like two days after his departure the official newspaper published a strong rebuttal to his last speech and they even called him negro in a derogatory tone.

Overall I think the trip was a smart move.

Government was able to show that the WT was just a publishing house and that they were never registered as anything else, certainly not a religion.

That is a lie. It is a fact that the WT is a religion.

I don't necessarily disagree, but perhaps it depends on your definition of religion.

Fisherman, which ones of the following are religions?

    (1) Scientology

    (2) Pastafarianism

    (3) Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption

Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption is explained in the following link if you haven't heard of it:

I would be interested to know your answers.

    A previous post quoting wikileaks:

There was a question regarding the legal status of the WT, here is some information on that:

    3. (C) The religious leaders explained that the Jehovah Witnesses have rapidly expanded since 1994. They stated that in 1996 there were 70,000 practitioners in Cuba, and that since then the number has grown to 90,000. The number is far greater than is cited in several studies of religion in Cuba. There has been a steady increase despite the fact that the community has lost many members through emigration. Jehovah Witnesses are frequently approved to travel to the US as refugees. The organization has not petitioned the government to be officially recognized as a religion. They are not a member of the state sanctioned Council of Churches. Because of doctrinal differences the organization does not get involved in ecumenical efforts. The leaders presented that they have a minimum amount of friction with the government. The members steer clear of any involvement in politics. They are not allowed to establish individual "Kingdom Halls" as places of worship. They said that their members hold regular meetings and bible study classes without difficulty in private homes throughout the island. Some of these residences can accommodate several hundred people. The leaders said that even without having official status as a legal gathering, the local authorities have given verbal permission to hold the meetings. The leaders indicated that they are very respectful of their neighbors and the meetings have not been the subject of complaints.

Even here in USA the Watchtower was never a religion and for years the JWs went from house to house preaching that fact.

Castro is going to be 90 in August and he is announcing his departure.

And to think that all the persecution, suffering, trials and tribulations were all for nothing. The actual JW organization has nothing to do with the way that we practiced our faith and endured.

I was reading about the recent events in Russia and the letter with recommendations from the WT. Everything that is suggested was applied in Cuba and it didn't work, I feel sorry for the Russian friends and if they are smart they will not follow all that silliness.

Cubans just celebrated the 90th birthday of Castro and 63 years since the start of his Revolution, the system is strong as ever and every aspect of daily life is under firm control of the Government; this includes the WT operation.
