It helps if you are replying to an earlier comment if you use the quote function and if it is on another page use link as well.
Personally I don't like the nested comments format.

Yeah, I think nested comments work for some topics (and users), less so for others.
I think the sub-comments that stackoverflow has are the best middle-ground.

Only one mans opinion but i find reddit obnoxious to try and follow from a mobile device.

I have not joined the reddit community as it seems to difficult to follow.
I have been spoiled by this forum and its easy to navigate and follow format!
