I think congratulations are long overdue to the Wt for the excellent job they do of keeping members dumbed-down and feeling safe inside the cocoon of a hive mind.

They tell us that the best education program in the world is reading the wt publications but here is a conversation I had with my uber elder buddy yesterday that may prove otherwise.

We were talking about the October broadcast and the question of whether Gods name should be included or not, when I made an offhand comment about the compiling of the new testament and the canonisation of its books. My elder friend asked me what I was talking about because 'Jehovah' compiled the bible including, of course, the NT.

He was completely unaware of the events that took place over the course of hundreds of years after the NT books were written, primarily by what we would call 'the apostate Christian church', aka Catholics, that led to the eventual formation of the bible as we generally know it today. Even now there are different versions of the bible that are accepted by various branches of religion and the book of revelation wasn't generally agreed upon as being canon before the 5th century ad.

I should mention that my friend is over 50 years old, he is an elder, ex-pioneer, ex-bethelite and the son of a missionary couple. Yet, even though he has had an amazing wt education, he didn't know how the bible came to be.

    Once again, well done wt.

Just wanted to add that I started this topic and just wrote off the cuff at work, so I didn't have time to add some links.

In defence of my buddy, I am certainly no biblical scholar either and the irony is that I have learned more about the bible after I stopped attending meetings.

As usual, some great threads about this topic right here on these forums.

    Great Observation JJ

I learnt so much about the bible as we know it in the last four years that I continue to add, ad nauseum, "best violin ever"

    Great thread Joey!

Yes, the GB have been so successful at making JWs PROUD of being deluded and ignorant of so many things (that just a basic google search would change....)

I agree with you Stuck, I have encountered this pride in JWs several times recently. Proud to be a believer whatever evidence there is to the contrary-- proud to be a JW--proud to be ignorant!

If your self worth depends on a validation by JWs then that's where you will likely remain, sealed in a bubble and interpreting everything you hear and read in the light of your cherished delusion.

This information is available, well, at least glossed over, in the old "All Scripture Inspired" book, which has been consigned to the WTS ash-heap, another forgotten piece of "literature".

That book was used extensively in the "Ministry School" quite extensively through the late 90's, maybe even into the early 00's.

So if he is 50+ now, the guy probably did have at least a vague idea of what you stated, maybe 20 or 25 years ago. But in the meantime, as the WTS has moved from a pseudo-intellectual approach to a 100% emotion-driven approach, stuff like that is long forgotten by most.

joey jojo - "... even though he has had an amazing WT education, he didn't know how the Bible came to be."

    Didn't you know?

He doesn't need to know how the Bible came to be.

All he needs to know is that JWs have The Truth.

I prefer the term 'rational ignorance':

Rational ignorance is refraining from acquiring knowledge when the cost of educating oneself on an issue exceeds the potential benefit that the knowledge would provide.

If a JW reads up on Evolution for instance......... and tells his fellow believers....." look what I found out about Evolution.......... it should be considered as a method that Jah used!" You could indeed be thrown out of that religion.

Ignorance for a JW is necessary for belief. This is the first thing one has to accept to become a practicing JW. to understand that when the Society speaks........... the thinking has been done.

If at all the Bible is God word, he (God) should have provided it in all the languages of the world, written in pages of gold, or any more hard materials, that cannot be erased or altered in any form.

After all humans could create Read Only Documents. Why cant god ?

And It should contain real words of wisdom and fascinating truths about the Universe. Not "The Sun stood still for Joshua's Battle" types of ignorance.

I never knew any of that either, until I quit going to the KH.

Here's a book to suggest he read: Forged: Writing in the Name of God--Why the Bible's Authors are Not Who We Think They Are, by Bart Ehrman. I understand that not everyone agrees with all of Mr. Ehrman's points, but this book is sure an eye opener.

    Available on Amazon and Kindle.

His brain might just explode when he reads this.
