This is was in today's Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel newspaper. It looks like the congregation that was victimized by this JW Elder (Raymond L. Knowles) could have been from my old congregation, Lauderdale Lakes, as one of the victims is from Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. The articles references not only the Knowles incident but also scams committed by Greater Ministries International Church, Baptist Foundation of Arizona, and Christian Science Church.

Here are previous links also discussing Knowles:

It appears, when an individual takes advantage of friendship and tight-knit structure of people in religious groups by taking their time and money then not delivering on the promise, its called an investment scam and charge them with Religious affinity fraud However, if you are designated a Corporation, it receives the Governments blessing and a tax free charitable status.
