Liftons Dispensing of Existence in JWs....

In his book " Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism" Lifton lists his 8 thought reform criteria under the chapter heading "Ideological Totalism".

With regard to the criteria of "Dispensing Existence" and what it comprises, Lifton says:

QUOTE: The Totalist environment draws a sharp line between those whose right to existence can be recognized , and those who possess no such right.

Perhaps no more need be said than that. However Lifton elaborates, saying that :

QUOTE: The world is divided into the PEOPLE and the REACTIONARIES, or LACKEYS OF IMPERIALISM.

Now, of course, we are talking Chinese Communism here, so the terminology, of course is different from what we might be familiar with, But the point is that the world is divided into opposed camps. Those who work for freedom and niceness, and those who work for nastiness. The nice ones have the right to exist. The nasty ones have the right to cease to exist. That is all. It is very simple really. Lifton points out that, of course, real people are involved in all this, and real people dont necessarily fit the simplified stereotypical characters that the Totalism allots to them, so:

QUOTE: Much of prison thought reform was devoted to making the Westerner conform to the pure image of EVIL IMPERIALIST so that he could take his proper role in the Communist morality play of Chinese history.

So whether a captured American was an imperialist in his nature or not, didnt matter, he was assigned a simplified role as working for the forces of nastiness, and he had to fit the role. Lifton states:

QUOTE: Under conditions of Ideological totalism, in China and elsewhere, NONPEOPLE have often been put to death.but the thought reform process is one means by which non people are permitted, through a change in attitude and personal character, to make themselves over into PEOPLE.

Lifton points out that in China under thought reform, death sentences were frequently handed out and then put on hold for 2 years while the condemned worked to make his character over into that of a PERSON. He had plenty of incentive at least. Thus in the Dispensing of Existence :

QUOTE: There is just one path to true existence, just one valid mode of being, and all others are invalid and false.

And as false existances, they must cease to exist literally, when the world victory of Communism is attained.

Do the Jehovahs Witnesses dispense the right to existence?

    What do you think??

    No takers huh? sigh.

Okay...one article: "SET APART FROM THE WORLD" . Sept 15, 1971. Some highly selective quotation here....Actually these are just from the first couple pages of the article...

...."You will meet with opposition, even bitter hatred, from a different world- the world of mankind outside the Christian congregation".... This world hates Christ..... This wicked world and its system of things is under the control of Gods Arch enemy Satan the Devil....

Geez. I guess that means...everyone not a JW has no right to exist.

...." Jehovahs Witnesses call attention to Bible Prophecy which describes the League and the U.N. as a WILD BEAST that...goes off into destruction".

So I guess the United Nations has no dispensation to exist either.

You get the picture. Many thanks.

Much of prison thought reform was devoted to making the Westerner conform to the pure image of EVIL IMPERIALIST so that he could take his proper role in the Communist morality play of Chinese history.

This is the statement that struck me. The deluded minds in Brooklyn see themselves as being at the center of a "morality play" that is occurring at the "climax of human history". Hence the constant effort to condemn all of those outside JW-world as being "apathetic" or "not appreciative of spiritual things", immoral, on and on. I thought it so strange and out of character when one of the mags made some positive comments about Albert Schweitzer. It seemed so forced for them to give any modern person outside of their own org any praise. It seemed to me that they were just throwing a bone to their critics by making such a statement ("It's not true that we never say anything nice about anyone outside of WT"). On that note, it became increasingly obvious to me my last couple of years in that the the pages of the WT often contained remarks that to a less astute observer would seem innocuous, but I knew that many of the statements were in reaction to "apostates" and critics.

hey Dan you should write some threads on your observations of the cult. I reckon theyd be interesting reading...You said:

...."It seemed so forced for them to give any modern person outside of their own org any praise. It seemed to me that they were just throwing a bone to their critics by making such a statement ("It's not true that we never say anything nice about anyone outside of WT")."....

Ive noticed that myself. They might say "So and so has, doubtless, got good intentions". Then the next six sentences about 'so and so' will be laden with black/ slurring/ fear inducing terminology. The 'good' statement about 'so and so' always comes first. then the 'bad'. I guess they operate on the principle that the final word is the one most often remembered.

    Refiners:

I'd probably have more to say about them - but in a cathartic fit I threw away EVERYTHING except for the Proclaimers book last year when I learned the truth about "the truth". *sigh* One of these days I'll get my hands on a CD-Rom, but they are making it more and more difficult for "opposers" to get their hands on anything. I remember an elder I knew (the most rabid JW you can imagine) laughing at the idea of the WT being secretive and clandestine. Geesh, they passed secretive and clandestine long ago, they are now stage 3 paranoid. Cripes, I couldn't get my hands on a Barftower magazine if I wanted to. Wait, I just had an idea. I'll start hitting the local laundromats (don't know what you call them in Oz, where you have all the coin operated laundry machines), usually you can find a few mags there.

    Dan.

id say if youve only been aware of the deception in the WT for a year that youve made remarkeable progress. A year isnt long to recover from that. Hell, it took me 10 at least. So there you go....

Im sure there are people here who would rip stuff onto disk for you if you asked nicely. A very nice sister here ripped all the WTs from the 1920s onto Cd for me and mailed it to me. Very nice of her. Id do it myself for you (truly) but Im almost totally computer illiterate. Ive got a bud comes here and loads new programs into my comp for me every few months to keep me up to date. Without the kind assistance of others, comp wise, Id be lost.
