I think the internet has been a great support system.
It's really that the Watchtower has done the harm to people, and because of that, the broken ones turn to the internet to be able to figure things out, to have a hearing, compassionate and understanding ear... Quite the opposite of of the Borg. It is their cold-heartedness that will kill them, I believe.

What I like a lot in the Illuminati, it's they are very usefull to detect the Brainwashed-People-Thinking-They-Are-Free-Mind...
I turned to wikipedia to find a definitive list of past and present governing body members. This was after i had heard countless people talking about "GB member this and that", and felt bad because i didn't know anything they were talking about. And you had to search a lot on WT Library to try and get a list of names.
So i searched, and found Ray Franz name, and wondered why i had never heard of this guy who was effectively kicked out of the GB for dissension. So i did a google search which led me to this site.
I suppose it was the lack of transparency that led to my awakening.
The more the current crop of GB members talk themself up, and talk about "Bro GB this and that in the past", the more witnesses will search for former members, and will stumble on Ray Franz name, and Green-lees name. And the more they mention apostates, the more witnesses will get curious and do a bit of searching. It's basic human psychology, you repeatedly get told not to something, you eventually end up doing it. Apostate sites, Porn sites, sex before marriage among a host of other things that they keep on bringing up month after month makes people curious, which leads to experimenting with these said things.
So yes, the internet has already done a lot of damage to the Watchtower society, and the JW.org website has only been going for 2 years.

My first curiosity was to investigate about the Church Fathers of the second century, because I wanted to verify if the early church had the same doctrines of the Watchtower Society. For instance, I wanted to find the soul-sleep doctrine, but I found the contrary. The same happened with the issue of the cross. I found strong evidences pointing that Christ died on a t-shape crux, and so on.
This site helped speed up my fade, as well as answered questions and doubts I had.
When I found this site waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back around 2001 or so I could have sworn it was pro-jw or leaned that way. I had peaked around that time and was somewhat reaching out in the hall. For the most part I had begun a slow trend of half assing it. Summer 2001 was the first summer I intentionally drove around Houston all day and missed the convention.
When I found this site I noticed people openly verbalizing questions and thoughts I had in my mind. Despite that I left the site for a while again thinking it's a trap from Satan ! Around 2005 or so I found myself back again peeking around and my fade began gradual and steady decline. I was doing alot free help with the RBC down here in the Houston area for Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 and then Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. I rememeber after all that work it was close to around that time that you needed to be 'approved' to do free work. This site exposing what a sham the RBC was was not lost on me.
Realizing I wasn't the only brother jumping through hoops to be a MS, realizing that 10 hours at that time was the unspoken time needed. My elder telling me..."Just try to make 10 hours" ( despite my throwing myself into everything and being qualified.) Having two close friends tell me two things about Bethel :
1. The first friend "Bethel is different. It's not for everyone." And woukld never say anything but that.
2. The second friend telling me how much they drank at Bethel,stayed drunk and how many sisters he had smashed.
I got baptized as a 'worldly' person. I thought everyone was on the up and up. This site opened my eyes up ALOT.

I think it's different for everybody.
For me, it was realizing that evolution had to be true, creationists (including the WTS) used dishonest and underhanded means to refute it, and that if the GB was wrong about something that big, what the hell else were they wrong about???
I'm sure the internet is a massive carbuncle on the bOrg's backside. How can it not be? I can only give you a comparison to when I fled that cult back in 1980. There was nothing out there as far as info, other than a few old books in the library. I can't even remember the titles but I recall two written by ex-JWs that I took out and read in secret, as well as some books on cults in general. So without the internet, you actually have to be doubting the JW scam in the first place and making the effort to look for proof of your doubts. With the internet, it's far easier to just come across something that makes you stop and think. Even if you listen to the warnings about not reading that stuff, the ease of access is a problem for the JWs. Far easier to keep away from the Religion section in the library.
The thing I regret not having though was the support everyone gives and gets here. I so could have used that back then, so be grateful you have this place and appreciate your fellow forum members. It's really tough doing it completely alone.
