Man found dead off Branford road

BRANFORD A morning walker discovered the body of a middle-aged man in a semi-wooded, overgrown area just off East Main Street Thursday, police said.
Investigators from the State Police Major Crime Squad and the Branford police department said they are still trying to determine how the man died. The state is assisting local police in the investigation.
Police believe the man was dead about 24 hours before he was found at about 9 a.m. Police cruisers lined East Main Street and Route 1 most of the day while investigators blocked off the area and inspected and videotaped the scene, about 75 feet from East Main.
"We found a deceased male and the cause of death is undetermined at this point," Detective Sgt. William J. Carroll said.
Carroll said police believe they know the identity of the man but they declined to release his name until his relatives are notified. He was described only as a white, middle-aged man.
Carroll declined to comment on any preliminary indication of how the man died, saying the chief state medical examiner's office in Farmington is expected to release the results of an autopsy today.
The road near where the man was discovered is largely a commercial district, but a residential home at 699 East Main St. is adjacent to the wooded area and the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses is directly across the street.
No one answered the door at either building.
"We're investigating it," Carroll said. "We're awaiting the results of an exam (from the medical examiner)."
State police declined to comment.
