Charles Russell's dad own a small chain of clothing stores. Russell worked for a time in his dad's store. and it has been said that he was good at book keeping (even though latter he didn't know there was no "zero" year in computing the end of the Gentile Times!). I do not think he worked long for his father though. Someone might know the answer to that. The questions I have are: How much did Russell inherit? and, When did he inherit the money? We all know what he did with the money of course. --VM44

Amazing
I don't for sure how much he inherited, but it was a lot for his day and age. Actually, when Charles founded Zion's Watchtower, his did was on the board of directors, and I think an officer in the corporation. So, it may be that much of the Russell estate may have been gradually transferred to the Watchtower while Charles dad was still alive ... if they did this through a family trust or foundation, then they would also have avoided taxes, although prior to 1913 the income tax was not there, and estate taxes may have been modest. So, any transfer may not have been as motivated as it would be today to escape taxes.

Another thought.....Russell having some ablility at bookkeeping might have influenced his biblical interpretation...like saying 144,000 is a literal number, that the meaurements of the pyramid held biblical and historical significance, the computation of the Gentile times, and in general his search for "secret" knowledge contained in the bible. Russel appears to have believed that when numbers are mentioned in the Bible, they are to be taken literally. I wonder what he would have thought about the modern day "Bible Code" fad? --VM44
