G'day all,
How did your wine tasting go last month?
Here in Oz, there's been a lot of good quality reds appearing on the shelves of local "bottle shops" (as we call them here downunder).
Ozzie's recommendation for this month is a red that Mrs Ozzie and I downed in double quick time over a meal at our favourite restaurant last night.
I had eye fillet medallions wrapped in bacon slices etc etc. I teamed it with a bottle of Penfolds
Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2001
Shiraz (Syrah), Cabernet Sauvignon
Maturation
Matured in used American and French oak barrels.
Winemaker Comments:
John DuvalColour
Bright crimson.
Nose
A youthful mix of varietal Shiraz cinnamon and clove,
standing above Cabernet berried notes meshed with dark
cherry and summer pudding fruits. An element of appealing
savoury oak is evident, providing structure and complexity.
Palate
The palate displays a commendable balance of vibrant fruit
and well-handled oak, with trademark mid-palate richness.
The wine has impressive weight, length and persistence of
flavour with stewed plum, rhubarb and dark berry
prominent. Befitting the excellent vintage, this is possible
the best Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet since 1998 and
whilst drinking well now, will age well in the medium term.
