Art Worsley & Cancer Treatment

I was hoping some of you erudite folks could add to this
    story - or correct it.

Years ago, I heard that Art Worsley got cancer - leukemia
I think. Several years after that, I was surprized to
hear that he was still living. Somebody at Bethel told
me he was receiving an alternative treatment - a powder
made from beets that was sent from West Germany.

Later, I read about Hungarian researchers working with
a treatment for cancer based on beets - I never heard
    anything more about it.

Anyway, if true, this would be the only time I've ever
known of a case of 'alternative treatment' working
in a situation involving cancer. Can anyone add to
    this story?

    Meta,

I can't add any clarification to your question about Art Worsely, except to say that in the Bethel subculture that I experienced, homepathic and radical ``holistic,'' ``organic'' and other unorthodox cures -- which the medical coumminty often debunked as quackery. were accorded wide credibility.

I was alerted to the seriousness of Knorr's health problems when working in his apartment, where I saw a small pile of pamphlets and books on his nightstand, all dealing with Laetrile and suchlike ``untraditional'' treatments for cancer.

I don't know about Art Worsley's situation, but I do believe that Alternative Medicine has saved people's lives in some situations. Years ago, I read about the Max Gerson Therapy which he presented to Congress (I think) back in the 1930s. He never made a claim that it worked for everyone, but had documented sucess rates of about 30% - 40%.
This might not sound like a lot, but all these people were told by their regular doctors that there was "no hope" and they were basically given up for dead.

Most of his patients came to him after conventional medicine failed and were trying this as a last resort.

I think there needs to be a balance though. We have made great strides in modern medicine, but unfortunately here in North America, anyone who believes in "Alternative Medicine" is viewed as a wacko. Alot of natural remedies such as St. John's Wort, Gingko Biloba, Natural Progesterone Cream, have been prescribed by doctors in Germany for years as an alternative to drugs. While drugs can certainly save someone's life, it doesn't get at the root of the problem which needs to be addressed if the person is to completely heal.

If anyone is interested, here is a link to the Gerson Institute where you can read about people with life-threatening diseases who made a full recovery:

I don't know about Art's "cure" through alternative medicine, but I do know that it didn't cure him of often waking up in the middle of the night with hot sweats. The way Rutherford and Knorr treated men like him nauseates me. I'm sure that by the time he woke up and realized his life was a waste for a pack of liars he also realized he had no where else to go and was too old to take a chance.

If you look at how young and vigorous he looked by the society's missionary yacht in the Proclaimer's book and then talk to people who remember him when he was old and worn-out in the service of Watchtowerism, you can't help but feel very sad for that nice fellow.
