Three days ago, we received our first short-term foster child. Won't go into details about the young ladies problems but one request of the girl's mother was that the 11 year old read from the bible every day. So, my wife sits with her every evening listening to the girl read from the OT. Meanwhile I'm around the corner grimacing realizing this poor child is taking this all in as literal history. I'm thinking, how can we do this in good conscious knowing it will possibly lead to the girl growing up to be a fundy fanatic?? Then my wife comes out of the bedroom with this dazed look on her face and asks me if I ever really believed that junk! I expressed my concern that we were contributing to the delenquency of a minor and she laughed and told me the little girl hereself said she couldn't believe this was really true. So, I guess they had a chat about the meaning of alegory and metaphor. Now I'm wondering if the mother will be pissed when the little girl eventually goes home and tells mom that it's only myths and stories.....
