This was a word game that the WTS played back then. I think the WTS definition of the word "religion" was that it was anything that the WTS did not approve of.
Then sometime before 1950, I think, they decided that being a religion wasn't so bad after all - they had the TRUE religion and everyone else had FALSE religion.

My guess, at some point they lost a tax status argument somewhere in the world because they didn't call themselves a 'religion', so they had to change to a 'religion' to gain tax exempt status..
But that's just a guess, I could be wrong...

For a long time back then, witnesses said that what they did was "worship" what everybody else (those evil false Christians) did was "religion." I'm not sure why they made the change.
