Father's Day

I went out of town this past weekend.

I was almost home Sunday afternoon and when I rounded the corner to the cul-de-sac where I live, it just so happened that the wife was getting home just ahead of me. The garage door was going up and the car was pulling in...

In the back seat, kneeling in her car seat, was my baby (I meant to scold her for wiggling out of the strap and buckle like that!! I must've forgot. )

She was clapping like an idiot, grinning from ear to ear while yelling, "Daddy! Daddy!" You'd 'a thought that I was a Rock star, or a Super Bowl hero or somethin'.

Damn!... that made me feel good!! Never known love like this, I hafta say.

By the time I pulled in, it seemed her life was at stake 'cause she was madly crawling over the seat and opening the door to get out of the car ... to me.

Isn't Father's Day this weekend? Sorry, but I've never celebrated for various reasons so I forget. If past is prologue, my mom-in-law and a couple of my sister-in-laws have already picked out the Hallmark cards and I'll get them in the mail tomorrow, or the next day, wishing me a Happy Father's Day. They do it every year, bless their hearts.

But, I figure: being a dad is a reward all by itself. Trust me... my Little One gives me gifts every day. Every... single... day. To me, it's enough. More than enough. More than I ever thought I'd get. When you got a kid like mine, how can something bought in a store compare?

I admit, it scares me sometimes when I know that someone looks up to me and loves me that much, but god... I love being a Dad.

    Hi TJ,

You'll be glad to know that this love doesn't end with childhood, it gets better as the years go by.

    >> Would you care to share those reasons?

    Terafera,

Two reasons. The main one was that my folks separated for good when I was five and divorced a year later. For the next fifteen years or so, I saw the man a total of maybe three times even though come to find he never lived more than a couple of miles from us. He might as well have been in South America.

Then there was the little matter of a religious movement my mom got us hooked up in, a movement that discouraged every feel good day there was, including Fathers (and Mothers) Day. Gave too much attention to the individual, you understand. Might make a person puff up with pride or something. Cant have that.

Tee, I know what ya mean. Even to this day, when I get birthday cards or presents, I'm uncomfortable, as if too much attention is being paid to me.

I'm sorry to hear about how your dad treated you.... wow, you sure are the total opposite! You have alot to be proud of.

    Have a great weekend!
