This isn't in any way JW related, but will anyone be watching 'The Hunt for Britains Pedophiles' which starts tonight? From what I have heard about it, it supposed to be extremly shocking and disturbing, as the BBC got to shadow the Scotland Yard pedophile unit for two years and this documentary is the end result. It is supposed to be no holds barred and designed to shock, but in an effort to make more people aware of how huge the issue is here in the UK.

I will be watching it, but I have reservations about doing so, but I don't think its going to make for pleasant viewing.

The programme is still on now, but I found it literally unbearable to watch, so I had to quit before the end, not that I'm criticizing the show; in fact if I was a parent I would certainly force myself to watch it. It's just that I couldn’t put myself through it – it was the most shocking thing I have ever seen in my life, and I thought I was pretty much unshockable.

    I'm still watching it - it's galling.
These guys are sick - incredibly sick!!!

The sentences are so short!!! 1-3 years, with the examples I heard (I didn't see the start of the program).
Some of the investigations are longer than the sentences!!!
    It's ridiculous!!!

Well I have just managed to sit through half of it. I recorded it anyway for a relative who wasn't able to watch it. I had to switch off after about half an hour becuause it was just too much to take in but will make an effort to watch the rest of it in a day or two.

To be honest, and without trying to be dramatic, it left me with a splitting headache. its left me with a thousand questions in my head, how well do I know my neighbours? Relatives, even? Not that I'm going to start suspecting everyone I know or anything but it makes you think twice about things like when your kids are playing in the garden in a paddling pool in the summer, how do you know theres not someone lurking about with a camcorder.. *sighs*

There are some people out there so sick it defies all belief. Respect is certainly due to those 15 detectives at Scotland Yard. Having to witness that kind of thing day in day out, god knows how they do it.

One things for sure, the current system for dealing with these animals is just not working. Lame sentences, and thats if they are lucky enough to secure a conviction. What a sad situation.

    Hello :O)

Just missed it - but it sounds like it covered the kinda things from your worst nightmares :o(((

I am not sure how the UK compares with the States or the rest of Europe, but it is very disturbing to remember that in Victorian England, child prostitution was rife. The age of consent was, however, 13! Children were an economic asset at this time - they were sent up the chimnies, down the mines, out in the fields etc. at very early ages.

In the 1880's, 15% of Victorian households in London were regarded as *vicious*!

Unfortunately, paedophilia appears to be a more widespread problem than many people realise. It is often only when confronted with actual cases or when we know someone who has been abused that we come to realise this. It is a subject which has traditionally been *hushed up*, especially when child abuse has occurred within a family. Children have too often, imo, been frightened to speak out for fear of the ramifications.

The *paedophile* cunningly preys on that fear and reluctance on the part of the victim to report, whilst themselves maintaining a credible exterior of being above reproach.

I know of a case in the UK where a known paedophile was housed in a flat directly overlooking a small park which served an area where there were many small children. One little boy alerted his mother to a flashing light from one window overlooking the park and what appeared to be binoculars. The police were called and it was discovered that this person had a room full of photographs of the children in the park, and particularly of this one little boy, together with child pornography. It took a public outcry on the part of the local parents for this person to be moved, but as far as I am aware, he was not charged further nor was he *treated*, but simply moved to another area where he is no doubt continuing his activities!

It is certainly time for Silentlambs everywhere to speak out and expose this crime for what it is and for parents to realise that they do not necessarily *know* their neighbour/relation/ etc etc....

If it is true that those who are abused as children can go on to abuse others, the cycle of abuse must be broken, and the abusers must be shown that society will not tolerate such behaviour.

We must have policies in place to protect the children.
We must have procedures in place to support the victims.
Whether it is possible to re-habilitate the perpetrators seems to be uncertain.

    Hello :o)

For those in the UK, part 2 of the BBC documentary on paedophilia is to be shown on 13th June.

I too watched the programme last week and plan to watch the next hideous episode tomorrow night - it really made my blood run cold through my veins but felt it was important to watch it to realise the true extent of paedophilia in this country and how they are caught and controlled - I use the word 'controlled' very loosely as it hardly seems to apply in most of the cases featured so far.

I believe that tomorrow nights programme features a paedophile who is 'very involved in his local church' which should prove interesting, using religion as a front to hide the disgusting practices that these men, and women, are involved in - and I know we are all so aware of this in the JWs. It will be interesting to see how his church deals with the allegations.

As a final point, I am amazed by the strength of the officers who deal with this area of crime, I admire the courage that they show in dealing with such harrowing pictures, videos and voice recordings and find it hard to imagine how they can control their emotions when dealing with paedophiles when the natural reaction of most people would be to beat the hell out of them.
