Why do youtube videos play but not flash player ones on my iMac?

I discovered that my newly refurbished iMac PowerBook G4 will not install a Flash Player -- 'not supported by your computer's architecture.' I was disappointed that many videos on FB would not play. Yet, when Googling the same videos and finding them on youtube, they play great.

What exactly is a flash player and why don't they install on either of my iMacs? What research I did seems to indicate lots of bugs in FP.

Your expertise, as always, is appreciated.

Flash is a bit old-hat now - browser plugins are generally old and past it as an approach and this includes Flash, ActiveX, Java and others. Too many security holes and they take too much power in a world that's shifted to mobile devices - Apple actually blocked Flash.

YouTube does / did use flash depending on the device but can also use newer HTML5 video technology as well which may be why those still work. They will autodetect and use whatever is supported.

That's what I needed to know.

    Much appreciated.
