The church teaches that anybody who lives an upright life and follows their conscience goes to heaven, no matter what they believe. It's based on Romans , wher people of the nations are "a law unto themselves".
so a Muslim, Buddhist JW, atheist can go to heaven as long as they lived life with integrity.
where this leaves Torquemada and others of his ilk is moot... Or the 7 popes in NY Crooklyn Beth Hell.

It is actually quite an uninteresting question for un atheist. An atheist does not believe in a place called heaven nor does he believe in hell. Therefore I wunder who asked the Pope the qeustion? And for what reason? Was it a trap question to snare the pope.....

I'm sure it's true. This has been Catholic teaching for all of my lifetime at least (and that's quite a long time).

Catholic online: The Pope declared that all people, not just Catholics,
are redeemed through Jesus, even atheists.
However, he did empahsize there was a catch, (here we go).
Those people must still do good (and what does that imply).
In fact, it is doing good that they are led to the one who is the
source of all that is good.
I like this Pope.....
