What the writer of Revelation intended by his cryptic 666 mark of the beast reference.

It's amazing how simple the answer is and yet the Watchtower organization seems completely oblivious to it. Revelation itself tells you what the number is: "a man's number", "the number of his name". The writer of Revelation spells it out and yet they don't see it! Not only that, the answer is not really a mystery at all. It has been known for centuries and is even corroborated by textual variations of Revelation! See the video below:

I think this is the most reasonable and historically sound explanation I have ever heard for the meaning of 666.

I also say something to the fact that the 616 also added up to Nero, using the greek alphabet or something.

Woah, this explanation is a lot better than what other religions today try to make out of it. Makes a whole lot sense tI find out what it meant back then. If only people knew this. Good video, thanks for sharing

It was known since the second century that 666 represents Caesar Neron or 616 in Latin form as Nero; both names verified through coinage circulation. Back then you do not want to piss off the most powerfull man in the empire and ended as a torch in his garden. It is the same in any dictatorship, you do not oppose dictator, so you use cryptogram that was understandable to Christians still attached to Judaism (the split happened around the same time). The censor who probably checked the writing of prisoner in exile did not find any direct references to his employer in Revelation and the scroll was able to get into Christian communities in Asia Minor.

    But, but, but...

...if 666=Nero, and "Babylon the Great"=the Roman Empire, that might lead one to conclude that Revelation might have simply been written as a coded message of comfort for 1st Century Christians, rather than a warning of an impending Apocalypse for a virtually unrelated group of people 2000 years later...

... and if that's the case, what point would there be in present-day Apocalyptic/Millennialist Christianity???
