Sex Crimes in Xenia

In Xenia, Ohio, the police have assigned a detective to go to teen chat rooms and pose as a 14 year old girl looking for a good time. As a result, they have arrested about one man a month, over the past three years, who come to Xenia to have sex with a girl.

You might want to pass this on to your local police department. If all cities did this, it would cut down internet sex crimes.

Also, in Ohio, you can go on the internet and find out the address of sex offenders who are out of jail. My wife looked this up and found out that there was a sex offender that lived three blocks from my grand daughter's house. Of course, my wife alerted my daughter of the nearby danger. I don't know if all states have his provision. I hope they do.

The problem in britain is that this would be viewed as entrapment.

Do you catch someone intent on committing a crime or have you 'created a criminal' by tempting them / suggesting something?

I think it is a good idea but can't see it working here just yet.

I generally have a problem w law enforcement enticing citizens to commit a crime, in effect creating criminals. It sounds a lot like they want to generate statistics to prove they are needed and are doing the job.

The public is very supportive of the procedure, and so far, no one has challenged it in court. As far as entrapment goes, if a man is foolish enough to drive for hours to meet a 14 year old girl, then I think he deserves whatever punishment is handed out to him.

It would be interesting to see some of the transcripts from said chatrooms. I wonder if some 14 year old guy chatted her up and said "It would be nice to meet you for some fun...", would they lure a kid to their town and charge him as well?

    Sincerely,

    District Overbeer

What happens when they try these "techniques" with crimes that aren't so emotional? Sure everyone doesn't mind now because child abuse hits everyones nerves, but this sets a dangerous precedent.

    Naeblis,

We already have a precident. Police women routinely dress up as street walking hookers and make arrests.

That's different. They're standing there and the men are coming to them and openly ASKING for sex. They don't have long conversations than offer sex at the end and then arrest the men. You cannot trick someone into a crime just because it is likely he will accept. This is entrapment. I don't see how any of these men caught in Xenia are found guilty in court.
