The P.E.I. Rape and Sexual Assault Centre is trying to reach out to male victims of sexual abuse in an effort to find ways to make it easier for them to come forward and seek treatment.

The survey can be completed on line or over the telephone by calling 1-866-566-1864.

It's conducting an online survey as part of a research project looking at barriers that prevent men from reporting sexual abuse and getting help.

Sigrid Rolfe, co-ordinator of the centre, said it's difficult for any victim of sexual abuse to come forward, but particularly for men.

"There's often a lot of shame and self-blame that go along with these crimes," said Rolfe.

"There is that, I think, component for men in terms of the socialization and the difficulty in seeing oneself as a victim."

The survey is anonymous and doesn't require men to share specific information about their experiences. Rolfe said the goal is to determine the best ways to support the needs of male survivors of abuse on P.E.I.
