The Catholic Church has only recently apologized and cleared Galileo of any wrong doing regarding his support of heliocentrism. The Church had charged him with heresy and threatened him with torture if he did not recant publicly. So he did. Galileo was not the first to discuss heliocentrism, however he did revive it.
