The conflicting tracks about the anointed

I was gobsmacked to hear wife tell me this:

She said the CO's wife in her mother's hall is anointed.

My MIL asked the CO's wife why she thought that the number of anointed are going up.

The answer will make you think, and might make you a bit angry.

    The CO's wife said:

Well, 'they' looked around and realized we need more anointed, not less, as they are the ones who take the lead (ie, the FDS).

I trust the source for this information implicitly; I believe it.

This makes sense from the view of headquarters: they want LESS partakers out here in the boondocks (ie, not headquarters), but they want anointed ones who are high functioning, trusted elders, special pioneers, CO's, DO's, etc to move up the ranks for leadership.

The WT recently said that anointed ones generally have a long record of faithful service (ah, more qualifying of who the 'spirit' selects).

It makes a certain kind of sense, but is very cynical and it illustrates the predicament the WT has put themselves in; they are forced to say that anointed ones are or should be declining in number; many here heard the same discouragement at the memorial against partaking and claiming to be anointed.

But the GB still needs vital, younger anointed to take the lead.

THUS they seem to be pursuing a 2 track policy toward anointed ones: officially discouraged, cold water poured on the idea, but INTERNALLY they are encouraging the idea.

    Your thoughts?

It flies in the face of the idea that god is supposed to be doing the choosing. How does the co's wife deal w that? Her brain must be thoroughly washed.

I think her brain, and most other devout JWs, would say that if they need anointed, they would 'search' their hearts, and maybe go for it, start partaking.

It very much follows the WT's habit of pursuing 2 tracks of things: what they say publicly and put into writing, and what they really say in private among insiders.

Who looked around and decided there should be more than 144,000?..

Is God building an addition onto heaven so more of the anointed can get in?..

Did anyone tell God there were more than 144,000 coming,so he can inform the caterer?..

Now only the WBT$ GB are the FDS..The CO`s wife has been Demoted..

Do the “other sheep” have as much of the Lord’s spirit as the anointed remnant, and as clear an understanding of Jehovah’s purposes as the anointed have?—A. M., Colorado.

If they are filled with holy spirit, how could any others have more than that? If a container is full, how can it hold more? Both classes must be equally faithful, under the same trying conditions. It is only by Jehovah’s spirit that any of us can stand. So if the “other sheep” do not have as much of the Lord’s spirit, yet have to endure the same tests and prove the same high quality of faithfulness as the anointed, they would be operating under a great disadvantage in the test of integrity. Jehovah God does not so handicap them, but gives them equal help for similar tests. Faithful men of old had Jehovah’s spirit, to write inspired scriptures, to cure lepers, to raise the dead, to cause rain or drought, to pull down pagan temples, to slay lions and bears, and to perform many other powerful works possible only with the help of God’s active force. Though not of the anointed class, they were filled with holy spirit.

The “other sheep” today perform the same preaching work as the remnant, under the same trying conditions, and manifest the same faithfulness and integrity. They feed at the same spiritual table, eating the same food, absorbing the same truths. Being of the earthly class, with earthly hopes and a keen interest in earthly things, they might interest themselves more in scriptures relating to earthly conditions in the new world; whereas the anointed remnant, with heavenly hopes and strong personal interest in the things of the spirit, might study more diligently those things in God’s Word. So because of these different personal interests the two classes might show greater interest in different features of the message, and comprehend more in those fields because of their special study of them; yet the fact remains that the same truths and the same understanding are available to both classes, and it is just how the individuals apply themselves in study that determines the comprehension of heavenly and earthly things they acquire. The Lord’s spirit is available in equal portions to both classes, and knowledge and understanding are offered equally to both, with equal opportunities for absorbing it.

So rather than the determining factor’s being whether one is of the anointed or other sheep class or not, it lies with the individual himself. One may be more willing to receive the Lord’s spirit and its guidance in his life than another, who may be quenching the spirit by not walking wholly according to its guidance. One may spend more time studying or naturally have greater mental capacities for learning than another, who may neglect study and mental training.

Can we say that God’s servants today who have the earthly hope have as much of God’s spirit as do spirit-anointed Christians?

This question is not a new one. This same matter was addressed in “Questions From Readers” in The Watchtower of April 15, 1952. Many have become Witnesses since then, so we can consider the question and in the process review what that earlier material said.

Fundamentally, the answer is, yes, faithful brothers and sisters of the other sheep class can share equally with anointed ones in receiving God’s holy spirit.—John 10:16.

This, of course, does not mean that the spirit operates in the same way on all individuals. Think back to faithful servants in pre-Christian times, who certainly received God’s spirit. With power from the spirit, some of them slew ferocious beasts, cured the sick, even raised the dead. And they needed the spirit to write inspired books of the Bible. (Judges 13:24, 25; 14:5, 6; 1 Kings 17:17-24; 2 Kings 4:17-37; 5:1-14) The Watchtower said: “Though not of the anointed class, they were filled with holy spirit.”

From another angle, consider men and women in the first century who were anointed with holy spirit, becoming spiritual sons of God with the heavenly hope. All had been anointed, but that does not mean that the spirit thereafter operated in the same way on all of them. That is clear from 1 Corinthians chapter 12. There the apostle Paul discussed gifts of the spirit. We read in verses 8, 9, and 11: “To one there is given through the spirit speech of wisdom, to another speech of knowledge according to the same spirit, to another faith by the same spirit, to another gifts of healings by that one spirit. . . . But all these operations the one and the same spirit performs, making a distribution to each one respectively just as it wills.”

Significantly, not all anointed ones back then had miraculous gifts of the spirit. In 1 Corinthians chapter 14, Paul mentioned a congregation meeting in which one had the gift of tongues, but no one present had the gift of translation. Nonetheless, at some earlier point, each one of them had experienced anointing with spirit. Would it be reasonable to say that the brother having the gift of tongues had more of the spirit than others present? No. Those other anointed ones were not disadvantaged, as if unable to understand the Bible as well as that one or unable to face trials as well. The spirit operated in a special way on the brother who could speak in tongues. Still, he and they needed to stay close to Jehovah and to “keep getting filled with spirit,” as Paul wrote.—Ephesians 5:18.

Regarding those of the remnant today, they certainly have received God’s spirit. At one point it operated on them in a special way—at the time when they were anointed and adopted as spiritual sons. Thereafter they “keep getting filled with spirit,” having its help when they seek to understand the Bible more clearly, take the lead in the preaching work, or face tests—personal or organizational.

Members of the “other sheep,” though not having had the experience of being anointed, in other respects do receive holy spirit. The Watchtower of April 15, 1952, observed:

“The ‘other sheep’ today perform the same preaching work as the remnant, under the same trying conditions, and manifest the same faithfulness and integrity. They feed at the same spiritual table, eating the same food, absorbing the same truths. Being of the earthly class, with earthly hopes and a keen interest in earthly things, they might interest themselves more in scriptures relating to earthly conditions in the new world; whereas the anointed remnant, with heavenly hopes and strong personal interest in the things of the spirit, might study more diligently those things in God’s Word. . . . Yet the fact remains that the same truths and the same understanding are available to both classes, and it is just how the individuals apply themselves in study that determines the comprehension of heavenly and earthly things they acquire. The Lord’s spirit is available in equal portions to both classes, and knowledge and understanding are offered equally to both, with equal opportunities for absorbing it.”

However, genuine anointed Christians do not demand special attention. They do not believe that their being of the anointed gives them special “insights,” beyond what even some experienced members of the great crowd may have. They do not believe that they necessarily have more holy spirit than their companions of the other sheep have; nor do they expect special treatment or claim that their partaking of the emblems places them above the appointed elders in the congregation. They humbly remember that some anointed men in the first century did not qualify to serve as elders or ministerial servants. (1 Timothy 3:1-10, 12, 13; Titus 1:5-9; James 3:1) Some anointed Christians were even spiritually weak. (1 Thessalonians 5:14) And sisters, although anointed, did not teach in the congregation.—1 Timothy 2:11, 12.

The CO's wife said: Well, 'they' looked around and realized we need more anointed, not less, as they are the ones who take the lead (ie, the FDS).

Except ONLY the GB (when the work together as a group) are the FDS:

“Who Really Is the Faithful and Discreet Slave?”

The evidence points to the following conclusion: “The faithful and discreet slave” was appointed over Jesus’ domestics in 1919. That slave is the small, composite group of anointed brothers serving at world headquarters during Christ’s presence who are directly involved in preparing and dispensing spiritual food. When this group work together as the Governing Body, they act as “the faithful and discreet slave.” - [Emphasis added]

Clearly, she must NOT be of the anointed if she is confused on this New-Light. Apparently she didn't get the memo. Holy Spirit must've missed her.

It's ok, my sources tell me it'll be public news in the July 15th WT.

Please tell the poor dear to get her doctrine straight!

I think we will see more of this happening, the concentration of younger anointed in the ranks of CO and DO.

It is a matter of keeping the exercise of power in the hands of 'chosen' ones.

My take is that the WT has NO interest in more anointed from the publisher ranks, and a great deal of interest in young, vital anointed moving up the ranks.

    Blondie - great articles!

but was there not a WT about 15 years ago that discussed if other sheep should pray for holy spirit? I recall the article basically implied that other sheep can pray for holy spirit but this is more of a symbol of their appreciation of Jehovah's holy spirit acting upon the anointed.

I am certain I remember this article that only anointed get holy spirit. Or am I crazy?

Interesting, but complex. I'll just make one relative point:

Isa 6:13 And there will still be in it a tenth, and it must again become something for burning down, like a big tree and like a massive tree in which, when there is a cutting down [of them], there is a stump; a holy seed will be the stump of it.

In the NT, the anointed are likened to an olive tree, where the gentile branches replace lopped off natural Jewish branches. But the stump or the root is still considered to be Jewish. If we apply the concept of the anointed chosen for heaven to Isaiah 6:13, with a clear indication that while the majority of the Israelites lose their standing in the covenant, except for a small remnant that becomes the "root" or the "stump" of the tree, and that holy root is based on the 12 tribes of Israel and thus the 144,000, then the 144,000 is a reference to the natural Jews in the kingdom. Since that makes up one tenth of the entire tree, then the entire number must be 1,444,000!

So technically, from an advanced spiritual point of view, there is plenty of room to fill the number of chosen ones in the heavenly class. In fact, elsewhere we find when the call goes out to come to the wedding feast, many beg off and don't come and when the number is not filled up then the servants go out and find those in the street not even invited to fill that number. That concept works a lot better when that number is 1,440,000 vs. just 144,000!

So as far as "context" is concerned in regards to the kingdom, it would not surprising that more are claiming to have the heavenly calling who are still active witnesses.

PART TWO, ANOTHER REASON FOR THE INCREASE: On the other hand, there is yet another reason why there might be an increase in the anointed still connected with JWs! That's because the parable of the "ten virgins" directly apply to the witness organization. These ten virgins represent the anointed among JWs. But as we note, five are wise and five are foolish. Thus when Christ arrived in 1992, the anointed who were wise and who had a focus on the "extra oil" in scripture, were able to recognize the true Christ and join him in the wedding feast. But five of the virgins were foolish and without the "extra oil" did not recognize the true Christ. In addition, the five wise virgins shared none of this undersatnding with them. So a division was created between the anointed from the Fall of 1998. This fundamentally means that half of the anointed associated with JWs fail their calling. If so, then one can surmise that there are many other places in the kingdom that might be filled by others!

So either way you slice it, there are at least two scripturally based reasons why more anointed ones are appearing at this time. One is because the number is actually 1,440,000 and second, there is a 50% failure rate of the original anointed JW class! So in general, the claim of anyone, een still associated with the WTS that they are of the anointed is considered legitimate until proven otherwise, even though it doesn't make sense under the current WTS' concept of who the anointed are and who the 144,000 are.
