LEAGUE OF NATIONS PILOT DIGITAL LIBRARY PROJECT

Dr. Robert Goehlert, the International Studies Bibliographer at Indiana University, conducted a research visit to Geneva, Switzerland in June where he met with officials from the League of Nations Archives and United Nations Library. Both institutions are eager to work with major research universities to promote their extensive international holdings. They hold a wealth of information on global issues since 1919 but lack the resources to disseminate this data. Dr. Goehlert explored potential collaborative relationships which could benefit researchers and these international organizations.

The Center for the Study of Global Change decided to fund a long-term project which will identify resources at the League of Nations Archives and the United Nations Library in Geneva for digitalization and subsequent dissemination to researchers around the world as part of the Pilot Digital Library Project. Dr. Goehlert and Dr. Jian Liu will travel to Switzerland in June 2000 to assess the League of Nations collections to determine which holdings are in greatest need of preservation and identify those parts of the collection which should be "published" on the Web. The Office of International Programs at Indiana University has purchased the computer and scanning equipment necessary to support this project. Dr. Goehlert has already identified two promising projects for the June 2000 trip:

    1. League of Nations Photo Archive: The Photo Archive would be an excellent starting point for the project because it is in good shape, manageable in size, and would serve as an important basis for a bibliographic database.
    2. Bibliographic Databases/Indexes: The creation of Bibliographic Databases/Indexes for the League of Nations and UN holdings would serve as an important secondary research tool. A bibliographic database of materials would aid researchers and could serve as a spring board for future projects.

In addition, Dr. Goehlert and Dr. Fenton Martin plan to compile a League of Nations delegate and official bibliography during Summer 2000. This guide would serve as a companion volume to the two projects currently planned.
