For those that have dismissed the Bible as God's word, but nonetheless sat through endless hours of JW analysis on certain major Bible doctrines, I wanted to know, just based on reading comprehension, what you thought the Bible was trying to say. Now that you don't believe it, you are the most objective persons to give critical analysis of what the words say....

    1- Hellfire:

    a) Bible teaches god tortures people in a firey hell

    b) It doesn't

    c) Bible itself is confused

    2- Good People go to...

    a) Bible teaches they all go to heaven

    b) Bible teaches they await resurrection to paradise earth

    c) Bible teaches some go to heaven and some go to paradise earth

    d) Bible itself is confused

    3- Trinity

    a) Bible teaches the traditional trinity

    b) Bible indicates Jesus is God, but no evidence that the Holy Spirit is one with them

    c) Bible teaches God, Jesus and Holy Spirit all fully distinct

    d) Bible itself is confused

  • King Solomon
    King Solomon

    c) for all.

Jewish rabbis say the Torah has 70 faces, suggesting it's meaning is open to the reader; there's a scripture for every interpretation. Same with kashrut/kosher laws: many Jews are quite different in terms of what they eat, etc. but all feel entitled to claim to be observant, and to feel superior to those who may have different practices.

Even a smaller work such as Aesop's Fables offers quite contradictory homilies, eg "look before you leap" directly contradicts the advice, "he who hesitates is lost".

Pick whichever scripture fits your agenda at a given moment; all of those choices have scriptures which can provide support to the belief.

  • Leolaia

The Bible doesn't present one single belief system or theological perspective; its an anthology of different books written at different times under different historical and social circumstances. One could choose (d) but it isn't that the Bible is confused; its that it is heterogeneous.

    4 - Individualism

    a) The Norton Anthology of American Literature teaches that individualism is a fundamental American right above all others.

    b) The Norton Anthology of American Literature teaches that individualism must be kept in balance with the needs of society as a whole.

    c) The Norton Anthology of American Literature teaches that individualism is egotistical and without moral grounding.

    d) The Norton Anthology of American Literature is confused.
