How can he do it without holy spirit?

I was reading this story on CNN.com this morning about Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani spending 1000 days on death row in an Iranian prison for having converted to Christianity and refusing to deny his faith.

How is this possible? He's not one of Jehovah's Witnesses. What kind of scam is this guy perpetrating that he could hold out this long without God's holy spirit? Only JW have such strength in the face of such tribulation. For that matter, only JW's have such tribulation.
There's something fishy about this story.

Our survival instinct is very strong. We don't need Holy Spirit to want to survive. He obviously had motivation to survive great enough to do so. He didn't need any magic juju to do it.
