The writings of Tom Paine ("The Age Of Reason") are pretty explicit about it, as he refers to a 'plurality of worlds' and sees no logic in the unstated assumption in Christianity that only the earth has rational creatures on it. He wondered if the Son of God had to visit every planet to die for their sins.
Just another bit of history that gets overlooked: this country was founded by a bunch of guys who thought ET's were probably out there, somewhere.
