The Lord of the Rings for Super Nintendo---my latest foray into retrogaming. I played the game in 6 days, after being stuck for a year because I couldn't find a stupid key.

This game is based on the animated Bakshi movie. It has exactly three tunes to listen to. Guaranteed to encourage you to finish the game really as fast as you can. It's mostly mazes. Hobbiton, the
Forest, the Barrow Downs, Gardens around Bree, then the Mines of Moria.

At no time are the entire nine members of the fellwoship together. You only meet Boromir for two seconds; he gives you his horn, then skedaddles off and never joins the party. (Smart guy) Legolas joins the party, then leaves and Gimli takes his place. All eight members can (if you keep them all alive that long) meet up and face the Balrog, but the hobbits are wusses and get toasted really quick.

You can lose (get killed) any member of the party you wish except for Frodo and Aragorn. Some of them are actually annoying and fun to kill off. You can only actually control either Frodo at the beginning of the game, or Aragorn once you get him at Bree. (The alternative is to control ALL the other party members together; this means you move one, they all move, but if one is behind a rock, then nobody goes anywhere)As you walk along, therefore, the hobbits begin to wander off one by one (and later Legolas and Gandalf and Gimli) and it's very annoying to go through the mines especially as everybody is going around getting into combat. It's easy for them all to get killed, and you can hear them engaging in battle somewhere off screen. And sometimes, you look around and some of the members are AHEAD of you.

Speaking of Legolas, he is worse than useless. When you first find him, he is right outside of Bree. He has lost his bow, and will not leave the forest without it. You traipse around, find it and bring it to him. He joins your party. And then---he does nothing!! He does not use any wepon. And whenever there's an enemy he immediately drops behind in back of the party and watches everyone else fight.--or better yet wanders off.. He and Gandalf both stay behind in Rivendell while the rest of the party heads for Moria---and then when you get to Moria they are there ahead of you. Eh?

First thing you should do when the Balrog comes is shove Gandalf and Legolas in the Balrog's face, use them for cannon fodder. Burn baby burn!!!

Funny thing---and I played the game from the beginning using all my own passwords (some have as many as 48 characters)You're supposed to wander around and collect all these jewels that you need to open the gate to Moria. I did all that. You have to use them in a certain order to open the gate; Gandalf and Legolas will be waiting for you to help you. However, when I got to the front door of Moria, it was already standing wide open, no Legolas or Gandalf anywhere!!!

One good thing tho--Tom Bombadil, Gildor, and Glorfindel and Old Man Willow were all cut from the Bakshi film; they do, however, appear in the game. Hooray!!!

Did you play this on SNES, or on your computer??? I am interested in downloading some of those old games which don't take up much memory and having a ball.

SNES. I have a lot of the computer games. I can't copy the floppy versions (I need COPY2PC REALLY bad) but I can copy the cd's and send them to anyone. I have walkthrus for them too. (LOVE this internet thang)

My next attempt will be Breath of Fire 1, which I've been stuck on for four years. I know how to get the water jar now. <sigh>.

I might be able to make a disc image (of the cd) and send it via file transfer. It'll take at least four or five hours tho; it's kind of an all-nighter sort of thing.

I have the two Zeldas for NES, I want to do those after the Breath of Fires (4 of them). I would do Lord of the Rings for Commodore 64, but I can't find a high-density 5 1/4 floppy for Commodore.
